"Fire Department! Call out!" I yelled as Severide, Casey, Hermann, and I entered another burning building. We heard two voices call out and followed them into a room on the second floor. By the time we reached the final step, I was almost out of breath. "Are you alright?" Casey asked me. "Yes. I'm fine, Matt." I replied, catching my breath. I helped Hermann get one victim out while Severide and Casey got the other out. After we helped the victims over to separate ambulances, I walked over to the truck and grabbed the heart pill bottle from my bag and took one with a bottled water. I took a few deep breaths and climbed into the truck, the rest following me in after. We ended up responding to a small fire soon after at a wing of Med. As we were putting out the fire, I had to walk out of that wing to the ER. Boden radioed me, "Where are you?" I radioed back, "Something's not right. I need to go find someone." "I'm sending Jimmy and Gabby with you. Stay where you are." He told me. "10-4" I replied. Jimmy and Gabby found me right after. "Honey, you look pale." Jimmy told me. I nudged him and said, "Just help me walk to the ER please. It's not that far." I held onto them for support as we walked to the ER. Just as we stepped through the doors to the ER, Halstead spotted us and helped us to the nearest room. "What happened?" He asked Jimmy. "She's having trouble with her heart." Jimmy replied. He explained a little bit more what was going on. As they were talking, a nurse placed electrodes on my chest and turned an EKG machine on. Halstead started an IV. "Will? Will I be okay?" I asked Halstead. "Yes, you will be okay. We need to run more tests on you. It's most likely that you have a heart murmur." He explained, he looked worried. "A..a heart murmur? Like Hope?" I asked, thinking of my younger daughter. "I'm afraid so." Halstead replied. Jimmy sat beside me as more tests were done. Hours later, the results came back....I did have a heart murmur.
"What are the treatment options?" Jimmy asked Halstead as I cried and held his hand. "Diuretics, medication, or surgery." Halstead replied. I looked at Jimmy then back at Halstead. I took a deep breath and said, "Surgery, if that makes it any better and if that means that I can get back to my life." Halstead took a breath and said, "Okay. I will go get the paperwork and we can get you prepped." We nodded. Minutes after signing and prepping, it was time for surgery. Before they wheeled me in, I asked Jimmy, "Please call everyone and let them know what's happening. I love you." He nodded and kissed my forehead, then they wheeled me in.
Three hours later, I woke up in a room. Jimmy, Cindy, Hermann and the kids stood around my bed. I smiled and said to the kids and Jimmy, "Hi, my loves." and to Cindy, "Hi Cindy." There were a lot of smiles and love going around. Halstead came in and I took his hand and said, "Thank you for helping me live another day to see my family." Halstead wiped tears from his eyes and said, "You're welcome. Anything to help a friend in need." We laughed. After Cindy and the kids left, Halstead told Jimmy and I that I'd be staying for two weeks, including physical therapy. Nevertheless, we were happy.
