"Truck 81, Ambulance 61, traffic collision at..." We rushed to suit up and gear up, but were baffled as more units were called. "Oh my God. This must be serious." Hermann said. "Yeah." I replied, concerned. We hopped in the truck and rushed to the scene. We arrived a minute later and followed Boden's orders. Severide, Cruz, Hermann, and I each worked in groups of two to get the victims and fires out. As we continued doing so, I heard Jimmy yell, "Caroline! Hermann! Look out!" I looked up just in time to see a light pole fall. Jimmy pushed us out of the way and we fell to the ground. I looked to where Jimmy was and I found him on the hood of the car, on his stomach, crushed underneath the head of the light pole. Hermann and I got up and rushed to get the pole off of him. Severide, Cruz, and Boden along with other firefighters from other units helped us. I gritted my teeth and screamed as the pole was lifted off of Jimmy. I fell on my knees and touched Jimmy's hand. I felt for a pulse on his wrist, it was weak and thready. "Get him on a stretcher and to Med now!" I told Gabby and Sylvie. They did. As I heard the doors close and the sirens becoming distant, I couldn't move. I was in shock, I was terrified.
Hermann and Stella helped me up and we walked away from the scene and to Boden's vehicle. They sat with me in there as Boden drove to the hospital. I cried and prayed on the way there. We arrived a minute later. Boden and Stella sat with me in the waiting room while Hermann talked to Dr. Halstead. They both came back shortly to tell us that Jimmy's spine was crushed and they were taking him to surgery. Two hours later, I was allowed to see him. Hermann and Halstead walked me to his room. Jimmy was hooked to several different machines and IVs. I cried into Hermann's shoulder and he embraced me. After I cried, I knelt beside Jimmy and let him know that I was there. Hermann knelt next to me. "Hermann is here, too, honey. We all need you, I need you." I whispered. After five more minutes, it was time for Hermann and I to go back to work. I had to lie down in my bunk, I was that scared. I was scared that I wouldn't see the love of my life again. I heard a knock on the door and saw Matt and Gabby. I sat up on the edge of my bunk, stood up, and hugged them. "Jimmy will be alright. He's a fighter." Gabby assured me. After they gave me advice and we talked more, I felt better. The alarm went off as we were talking. I realized that my suit and gear were in Boden's squadron vehicle. I rushed to get those out, suit up, grab my gear, and hop in the truck.
