Three days later, Jimmy was discharged from the hospital, but had to stay home and recover for two more weeks. Mrs. Hermann would take care of him and the kids. One afternoon, while on another building fire call, I was trapped in a smoke filled room with an unconscious child and had to take my mask off. I radioed Boden, "Chief! I'm trapped with an unconscious male child...about 8 years old. There's a lot of smoke in here. I.." *cough* "...I took my mask off." He radioed back, "Borrelli! Are you insane?!" "Maybe. The child needs to breathe." "Alright...I'm sending Cruz and Severide, okay?" I coughed a few times, said, "Alright.", and covered my mouth with one hand and performed chest compressions on the little boy with the other. I heard the door being broken down and called out, "Cruz?! Severide?!" "We're here, Borrelli!" Cruz yelled. I picked the little boy up and handed him to Cruz once he and Severide entered the room. Then, the four of us were out of there just before the whole building collapsed. I had difficulty breathing by the time I walked to the truck, took my gear off, and got in. As we were on the way back to the station, I began going in and out of consciousness. "Caroline? Hey, you alright?" Hermann asked, then yelled, "Cruz! Turn around and head straight to Med! Step on it!" I lost consciousness as soon as he said that. I woke up an hour later in the emergency room to Dr. Choi and a few nurses treating me. "Welcome back, kid." Choi told me. I chuckled. I heard footsteps and saw Hermann standing outside of the room I was in. I motioned for him to walk closer so that I could talk to him. "Call Cindy and tell her to tell Jimmy and the kids that I'm okay." I told him. He nodded and said, "I will."

Mrs. Hermann, Jimmy, and the kids visited me three hours later. As Jimmy and I were talking, I felt a stabbing pain in my chest. I gasped out, "Get Choi!" Jimmy yelled, "Choi! We have a situation!" The next thing I know, Choi and Halstead were working on me to get me to breathe again. Jimmy held my hand while they intubated me. "What's happening?" Jimmy asked Halstead. His voice was panicked. Hermann and Severide came in and took Jimmy out of the room after Halstead said, "She's going into respiratory distress." "Stay conscious for me, okay?!" Jimmy told me. I went in and out of consciousness for what seemed like the hundredth time. I stayed conscious after I could actually breathe again. I gasped and sat straight up. "Welcome back, kid. Take it easy." Choi said. They gently laid me back and put an oxygen tube under my nose and started me on a saline IV to flush any smoke remnants out. Jimmy, Hermann and Severide came back in after Halstead gave them the okay.

Two weeks later, I was back on the job. My lungs were clear!
