For two whole months, Wu shut himself up in Shuai's clinic and ponder over his past mistakes, reflecting on his past pathetic life, consolidated on the learning points; to set a foundation for his new life.
In the day he helped Shuai to buy food, sweep the floor, do his house chores...; at night he sleeps in the clinic. Shuai gave Wu some money as salary, but Wu rejected. He just needed food and shelter. When Shuai arrive to work every day, Wu had already run a few miles and cleaned up the clinic.
In Shuai's eyes, Wu was a totally changed person.
He lost weight drastically before he started training, his saggy skin has been replaced by healthy muscles. His face became more defined, his facial features became super chiseled. His eyes had that spirit of determination, sometimes it makes Shuai's heart flutter.
'I want to start off as a hawker. When I earn enough money, I will open a shop.'
Shuai was poking the table with a ball pen, his charming eyes has a hint of acquiescence.
'This is a good plan too but it's difficult. Oh yeah, do you know how to shout?'
'Yeah.'
'Let me hear some.'
'(shouting some random phrases to attract customers)'
Wu hollered using some classic and old words, Shuai was laughing on the ground, Wu couldn't hide his laughter anymore too. Shuai was surprised, he hadn't heard Wu laugh so carefreely.
'Hey, I'm not sure if I'm helping you if I support you to change your way of getting a living.' Shuai reminisced when Wu just came, he was a miser but he lived happily.
Wu said seriously, 'It's better to live like this, but don't worry, I'll treat you like how I did before. As long as you don't avoid me, I'll smile to you every day, only to you.'
Shuai propped his head with his hands, staring at the desk. Why the hell did that sounded so touching?
'Oh, yeah, being a hawker isn't easy, are you ready?'
Wu's gaze glowing in determination, 'I've been preparing these days.'
Shuai shook, 'What did you prepare? Why didn't I see you preparing?'
'I ran every morning, didn't I? Long run, sprints, running with sandbags, running with a wok...'
'Okay I get it...' Shuai interrupted Wu, 'You do not need to think how to avoid the officers, you have to think of what to sell, isn't it? You must have a plan.'
Wu thought for a moment, 'I wanted to start with something simple, clothes have high costs, it's troublesome to get them too. Vegetables and fruits are difficult to carry around, they rot very easily. I wanted to sell pastries, but I don't have any skills, I can't make any. After considering much, I could only sell porridge.'
'Porridge is good too. 'Shuai said, 'Cooking porridge is easier, a small amount of rice is needed for a big pot of porridge. You'll just need to buy a big pot, a soup spoon, and some disposable cups, the costs are not high too.'
Wu nodded, 'I was thinking that too.'
That evening, Wu went to a shop to buy some rice, Shuai helped to buy the pots and cutleries. After they got everything together, they tried to cook porridge.
Despite Wu's background wasn't that wealthy, but he got two older sisters, his results were excellent too, so he did very little chores in the past. Shuai was the only child in his family, his parent wouldn't let him do anything. Both of them stood in front of the stove, not sure of what they're doing. They then finally washed the rice and lit up the stove.
'Put some dietary alkali, my mom used to put some in porridge.' Wu said.
Shuai put in a spoonful of alkali.
'Looks like it's too thick, let's pour some water in.'
'It's too watery now, should we put in some more rice?'
Shuai put in a handful of rice.
'You see, you put too much in there. Pour in some water.'
'......'
They kept adding ingredients in it, they wanted to cook some to taste but now they've cooked a potful of porridge.
'I think it's fine.' Wu said.
Wu rubbed his hands, served a bowl of porridge to Shuai.
'How's the taste?' Wu asked.
The porridge was too hot, Shuai slurped a small mouthful.
'It's a bit watery, but it tastes fine.'
Wu tried some, agreed with Shuai's comments, 'It's not thick enough, I'll add some more rice tomorrow.'
'Stop adding, can you earn more if you add more? We just wasted two pounds of rice, according to your way of cooking porridge, one small sack of rice isn't even enough to cook a pot of porridge. Plus the money for disposable cups and plastic bags, you're losing money.'
Wu's brows knitted together, 'The porridge they sell on the streets were quite thick, did we not cook it long enough?'
Shuai sneered, 'They added gelatine.'
'Are you saying...' Wu squinted his eyes.
Shuai rested his elbow against the door, looking cool, 'What you're scared of? Some gelatines are good for you, I'm also a doctor, can I lie to you?'
If it was in the past, Wu would have rejected Shuai's proposal, how could he do such things? People buy porridge from us because it's convenient to eat, how could we cheat them? We have to be honest, what's more important than money, it's the trust between people...
But now, who cares! I just want money, can you stop me?
In a speed of light, he ran towards the door.
'Wait for me, I'll buy a big box of gelatine now!'
Shuai shouted from behind, 'Remember, buy the cheapest one!'
