6: Lending money from mom

Wu laid on his stomach while the IV is dripping, turned his head to Shuai, 'I didn't do anything against my conscience, all I did is to treat her well, why did she want to break up with me you say?'

'Just because you're too forthright, too easy to read, that's why she thinks you're boring. Everyone has the desire to conquer; when she could easily get the sense of satisfaction from you, she will definitely lose interest in you. Would you watch the same tv series, again and again; play the same game, again and again?'

'Yes, I've watched "The Sword" for 20 times.'

Shuai said ashamed, 'Is there anyone as blunt as you?'

Wu scratched the worn out paint from the back of his phone, feeling uneasy, asked Shuai, 'Let's say, when I'm fully recovered, I'll buy an expensive gift for her showing that I'm not stingy. Will she still break up with me?'

Shuai answered delicately, 'Someone who doesn't love you will have numerous reason why she doesn't. Once you've finally got rid of one, another comes up again. You'll take ages to get rid of the problem but she just needs a short time to come up with one reason again. Seeing the speed you solve the problem, her speed of coming up a new reason to shut your mouth is faster.'

'I don't believe you,' Wu said stubbornly.

Shuai smacked his nape furiously.

'Why can't you just see the facts?!'

'I'm a scholar, you need an evidence to support your statement. Without backup, your statement is just bullshit. You have read too many novels, making you imagining things.People are not as complicated as you thought. Couples may break up because of a misspoken word or sentence, there are many cases as such!'

'Sure!' Shuai didn't argue further, 'God bless you!'

A month passed in a blink of an eye, the weather became cold, his wound has already patched up too. After one more month, Wu has lost 10 pounds again. He looked more neat and awake, looking smarter as ever. He has been chatting with Shuai every day, time has passed on faster, his temper wasn't as cranky as before. 

'You're really leaving for real this time right?' Shuai squinted at Wu, 'You're not coming back right?'

'I think so, I'm quite sure of it this time.'

Shuai left out a long sigh, 'Sure, go ahead. Just drop by sometimes.'

Wu took steady steps out of the clinic. As compared to last time, he wasn't  as anxious to see Yue Yue. He didn't give her a call, instead, he took a turn and went back home.

His mom was sitting by the heater knitting trousers for her grandson, but honestly, who still wear these nowadays? It's bulky and not easy to clean. But she insisted, she doesn't trust the clothes selling on the market. Fresh cotton, torn up pieces of cloth, busy chores. Once people gets old, eye sights are getting poor, can't seem to put the thread through the pinhole. 

'Let me help you.'

Wu's chapped hands squeezed the needle, eyes staring at the thread and the hole vigilantly.

'Son, you've lost a lot of weight.' Mom said bitterly.

Wu smiled, 'I'm on a diet.'

'You're too skinny, fatter makes you look tough.'

'It's not if you like it or not, it's your daughter-in-law.'

His mom asked again, 'When is Yue Yue coming again?'

Wu gave back the threaded needle to mom, replied casually, 'Soon, she's busy now, can't spare some free time.'

Wu's mom nodded, continued with her chores.

Wu peered as his mom placed the cut up cloth into an old shoe box, not sure why she's keeping it. She has been using this shoebox for ten years now, the company has closed down but the box still looked new without any dent. Wu felt dismal, words stuck in his throat.

'You have something to say?' His mom noticed something amiss.

Wu opened his mouth but nothing came out, he can't make this kind of request.

She got it, she moved towards the picket. She took away two of the stacked blankets on top, pulled out the bottom blanket. She tore up a tightly sewn opening at the side of the blanket, revealing another tightly sewn pouch. She cut it open and revealed stacks of money, there's just $10k within the layers.

'Mom, I'll payback you one day,' Wu said.

His mom waved her hand, 'We're a family, no need for such formalities.'
