Chapter Two
I'm washing my face when I hear footsteps come up behind me.
"Let me help you wash your hair." Rosemarie smiles.
"Aren't you supposed to be in bed?" I says. "Doc's orders!"
"What he doesn't know won't hurt him." I laugh and nod.
She pours water over my head then starts to lather the soap into my hair. As I slowly drift off she suddenly pours water over my hair again. I jump so high I splash her with water. "I'm sorry Rosemarie! I started to daydream."
"You're fine child. Water never hurt me before." I smile. "Okay you're all clean now."
I get out and quickly wrap a towel around my body then grab another one for my hair.
"Come with me." Rosemarie says to me. I follow behind.
"What is this?!" I exclaim. It's a beautiful long green dress with a silver belt.
"It was my dress. I can't fit in it now."
"It's gorgeous." I say in awe.
"It's yours."
"Oh no! I couldn't" I look at her, shocked.
"Yes dear, you can, and you will. I've got others for you, too."
"But--"
"No buts, dear. They're yours."
"Thank you so much, Rosemarie. I don't know what to say." I say, stunned.
"Let me do your hair. With this dress your dark hair would look so beautiful in curls."
"Okay." I say, speechless. So I sat on the bed and let her do my hair.
"Don't you look beautiful. I wish your mother and father see you now."
"Do you know where they are?" I ask, knowing the answer.
"No sweetie I don't but I wish I did." She smiled sadly. "I'm sure they'll come back someday." We both that wasn't coming true.
"Well I've got to go. I don't want to be late for my first day of work." I hug and thank Rosemarie again and run out the door.

I made it to the bakery and I adjust my dress then walked in.
The delicious smiles knocked me back. Yes, his shop usually smelt good but this was like floating on clouds.
"Hello? May I help you?"
"Yeah, I'm ready to get to work, John."
"Excuse me? Elena? My God, look at you! You look decent!"
"Thanks?" I didn't know wether I should be offended or not. "What am I to do today, John?"
"You'll be at the counter greeting people."
"Okay. What should I say?"
"Say, 'hi welcome to John's bakery the finest baked goods in town' then when they leave say 'enjoy and have a good day' works for you?"
"You're the boss, so yeah."
"Good. There's the first costumer now. Go on." He pushes me towards the young woman. I go up to her with a fake smile.
"Hi welcome to John's bakery the finest baked goods in town!"
"Why thank you but I'm looking for whole wheat bread."
Um.
"Of course. Let me help you with that. We've got Italian, French ah here it is whole wheat. That'll be 50 shillings."
"You're a sweet girl. Here you go." As she started to leave I say, "oh enjoy and have a nice day!"
She smiles at me and leaves. I sigh relieved. It's a good thing I know where everything is.
"So how did it go?"
"Like you weren't watching. You're too
cautious about things, John." I mutter."Well I've got to keep a good watch out there's a thief running loose. My heart stops. "A-a thief?"
"Yeah, everybody's been complaining, the butcher, flower lady. I think it's an animal running around though. I find small foot prints everywhere."
"Yeah, an animal. That's what it is." I turn around so he didn't see me start to sweat. I couldn't lose this job after just getting it, Rosemarie needed me more than ever now.
