Chapter six
"Don't go so fast!!" I yell.
"I'm not!" He yells back. He laughs at me. I shake my head and hold him tighter.
"This can't be happening!" I sigh as we come to a stop. He jumps down and grabs my waist to help me down.
"What can't be happening?"
"Me. You. I'm just a poor thief and you're a Prince! We're not even supposed to meet each other."
He looked hurt. "Is that how you feel?"
I sigh, "what else am I supposed to feel? This is completely out of my comfort zone."
"And stealing is in your comfort zone?"
I glare at him and keep quiet. I look around and finally take in my surroundings.
"Where are we?"
"Where I loved to go for lunch."
"But we're in the middle of nowhere."
"Actually, we're in a meadow not far from the kingdom."
"Oh. It's so peaceful out here." He grabs a blanket and lays it out on the ground. I sit down.
"Why me?" I ask him, quietly.
"What do you mean?"
"You chose me out all the girls in the kingdom to go on a Picnic with. So many eligible girls and you chose the poorest one of them all. I don't understand."
"It's not about eligibility, Elena. I don't care if all you have is dirt. Elena I see eligibility in you no matter what."
"But, I'm poor, prince William."
"William, friends call me William." He smiles and brings food out of a basket. I smile at him but was overtaken by the delicious smells that over take my senses. It was sliced beef and cheese.
"Wow, that smells amazing."
"Here, There's enough for the both of us."
"Oh no I couldn't." Could I? God, I was starving. My stomach growled so loud I had to cover it.
"Yes you can." I grab a couple of pieces and I try not to stuff my face in front of him but it was so hard that I had to shovel it all into my mouth. I swallow hard. He smiles at me, "better?"
"Better." I smile. It wasn't much but it was something.
For a while we just sat there staring at the scenery and enjoy the sound of peace and quiet.
"You caught my eye." He says, breaking the silence.
"What?" I look at him.
"Since I saw you at the bakery. There was something about you--"
"The clumsiness?" I mutter, interrupting him.
"No something else. Like a connection. I just had to get to know you."
"Why? There's nothing I can tell you about myself that would be interesting to hear." I scoffed.
"Try me." He challenged.
"Well, what do you want to know?"
"Tell me about your parents."
I stay quiet.
"I'm sorry, did I say something wrong."
"No it's just I haven't seen my parents since I was six. They left somewhere and I don't know where."
"I'm sorry." He says quietly.
"Don't be sorry they weren't your parents."
"Who raised you then?"
"Rosemarie."
"You told me a little about her that she was sick."
"Yeah she is. But she raised me and I've been trying to help her every way I can but I keep failing." I look at him. "Why do you want to know so much about my life? Are you trying to start a charity event?" I say harsher than I meant it to come out.
I could visually see the hurt forming on his face.
"I'm sorry." I get up. "Just take me home, please."
"All right." He sighs.
We pack up and headed back to the kingdom. I lay my head on his shoulder and fall asleep.
***
"Elena." Someone nudged me.
I moan. "Hmm?"
"We're back in the kingdom but I don't know where you live to take you home.
I shot up and groaned. Rosemarie must me worrying about me.
"I've got to go!" I try to get down.
"Wait, Elena, I'll take you home, just tell me where to go."
I stare and him for a while but reluctantly tell him where to go and we were off again.
I jump off and run off into the house.
"Rosemarie! I'm home!"
I run into her room and my heart sunk she wasn't in her bed but in a rocking chair by the window.
She was waiting for me.
I run to her.
"Rosemarie?"
No reply.
"Rosemarie?!" I cry, tears were running down my face.
"Elena?" She whispers. "Elena, dear, you take care of yourself."
"No, Rosemarie, please. Don't leave me."
"They're singing."
"Who are?"
"The nightingales. They're calling me home."
I sob and shake my head.
"Elena, don't be sad. We both know this day was coming."
"I need some more time, Rosemarie. You were going to get better. Don't go, I need you."
"Stay strong, baby."
"I can't. Not without you. You're my rock."
"I love you Elena. Goodbye baby."
She closes her eyes and goes limp I hug her and cry out for her.
"Elena--"
"You!" I spin around. "If I was with her! She'd be okay!"
"You did all you can do, Elena. It was time for her to go."
"No!" I try to run from him but he grabbed me and pull me closer. "I should have stayed with her. I thought I would have more time with her." I sobbed into his chest.
