Chapter Seventeen

***Elena's POV***

I ran to the bookstore with the papers in my arms. As I ran into the store I cried out, "Charles!"

I instantly froze as I saw the place was torn upside down. Paper and books scattered across the floor and bookshelves destroyed. "No, Charles! Where are you?"

I run into his tiny house and saw the same thing. Everything broken and in ruins. I started to cry, "no, this can't be happening!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. "It's not fair!"

I drop onto the couch and just cried.

When I find something I end up back where I started.

Alone.

When was this ever going to end?!

I don't have anymore relatives to lose. The papers didn't mention any other kin besides Charles and he's gone!

***

I woke up in an unfamiliar place but suddenly realized that I was in Charles' tiny house.

It wasn't a dream then.

Charles is really gone.

I started to tear up when I heard the bell of the front entrance ring. I froze when I heard mumbling and stuff being moved. I hid behind a still standing bookshelf.

I couldn't understand what was being said but I could pick out that it was a man and woman.

Loud and clear I heard, "This place is a disaster. Did you know the man who owned this store?" It was a woman.

Suddenly I got a chill when it felt as if my name was whispered. I must have imagined it.

"Come on. Lets get back, they're probably wondering where we are." The male voice said.

William! It was William. But who was the girl with him?

"William, is that you?" I dare ask.

I heard nothing more but a bell signal that they left. I scurried out of my hiding spot and to the front of the store.

I saw Henry galloping away with William and an unfamiliar girl holding into him.

He took me literal, he must have. He just dropped me like I was a dog and found someone better.

She dressed fancier than I, she must be some kind of royal.

Of course, it would make sense for him to find a royal girl to fancy.

He was getting nowhere with me, I guess.

That was fine, I didn't need him anyway.

But why did he stop by the store, and how did he know?

I had to at least ask him that.

But how? Especially with that girl on his arm.

I sighed. I was really back where i started. I was truly alone.

It felt as if my heart was being ripped apart.

What was I going to do now?

I ran home in the pouring rain. I took a hot bath and laid on my bed. I reread my mother's letter over and over wondering what my mother could have been trying to tell me when she was writing the letter.

I knew I wasn't going to figure it out on my own and I didn't have any money to go to Geneva on my own. I know who could help me but I didn't want to ask William for help. Not after I saw him riding off with that girl.

But I knew I had to.

***

The next day, I searched through some of the dresses Rosemarie gave to me and found a gorgeous blue one.

It had million of sparkly rhinestones at the top of it and it made a perfect evening gown.

I walked to town and got weird looks from people. I ignored them and headed for the castle.

I still was nowhere near when I seem him heading my way. I started to panic. What if he doesn't stop.

That's absurd, I thought to myself, because he was slowing down.

"Elena."

"William." I mutter. He starts to leave, "wait. William, I need to ask you for a-a favor."

"Yes? What is it?" He seemed distracted.

"I-I need to go to Geneva."

"What?" His eyes fell on mine with shock.

"I found--" should I even tell him? I'm sure he's busy with his new friend anyway. "I want to get away for a while."

"Why Geneva?"

"I heard its a beautiful this time of year. Why do you care?" I snap at him. He flinched then glared at me.

"Actually, I don't. Do whatever you want."

"You're right. I don't need your help, thank you for nothing." I shot back and ran off.
