Chapter Twenty Two
***Elena's POV***
"Carter? That's weird, my name is Elena Carter."
"They said something about a sister." He says to himself. "But I thought he meant Erica."
"Erica? You mean Lady Erica?"
"She's not really a Lady, she and my mother is forced to play the part of a rich duchess. They said something about looking for a young girl that was left behind a long time ago."
"Huh. What do you know! Coming to Geneva was helpful." I sighed, yeah, helpful in so many ways. "So you're saying that you're my brother? And that Erica is my sister?" He nods. I sighed. "So my sister led me to a trap. I'm sure feeling that family love."
"I'm sure she didn't intended on this. That man is tricky and backstabbing."
"What man?"
"He's the one that made mom and dad leave Nightingale."
I gasped. "The man I saw that night when they were leaving! Where's father?"
Soon the boys face fell. So did my heart. Oh no. "J-Joseph, where is father?"
"He-he died."
"What?" I squeaked. This can't be happening. "How?"
"Cancer. He was really sick and heartbroken. He died a few years after Erica and I were born."
"How old are you and Erica?"
"We're both sixteen, we're twins."
I wouldn't have guessed that one. They looked completely different.
"Joseph, we need to get out of here. Do you have any ideas on how?"
"Actually, I do." He slumped over to me and pulled at my chain. "This is going to hurt, bad. You'll need to take your shoes off." I took them off.
"Now what?"
"You might want something to bite down on."
I grabbed the hem of my dress and put it in my mouth. I knew what was coming. He was going to jerk the chain off of my foot. Absolutely painful but I need to get out of here. "Okay, I'm ready."
"On three I'll jerk. One, two, three!!" He jerks as hard as he could and I squeal into my dress. The pain! It was unbearable. I wouldn't be able to take no more of it.
"I'm sorry, Elena. But if you want to be free, I'll have to try again. Your leg isn't as small as mine." I looked at his and they weren't. I could wrap my whole hand around his. I noticed a blood red ring around his ankle. Probably where he had to put it back on and take it off so many times.
"One, two, three!"
I wasn't ready, I screamed as loud as I could. I slapped my hand over my mouth. "Oh no." I whispered.
I waited for someone to come running but no one came.
"No one can here us for miles. Lets go." He led me to the dark corner. There was a hole. Freedom!
He led the way out then suddenly stopped. "Someone's coming. We have to go back."
"What?! No, we're so close!"
"They'll catch us. Go back."
"I can't risk them finding out I'm not chained I have to leave now!"
"You won't get far. Now turn around!" He barked at me. I glared at him but turned around and hurried back. I grabbed the chain and jerked it back on. It took all I got not to scream again.
"Dinner time, maggots!" I heard that man who brought me in here say.
"Are you sure we're the maggots? Does anyone here own a mirror?" I spit at him.
"Just for that, no dinner for you. It's you're lucky day, boy, two meals! Eat up and no sharing!" The man laughed, throwing the plates at Joseph.
He laughed and walked off.
"Here." Joseph handed me a piece of hard bread. I took one bite of it and spit it back out. I shook my head. "I'll be fine. I know how to goes without food for a while."
He shrugs and stuffs his face. I felt so bad for him. I couldn't believe that when I came here to find my parents and found a brother and a sister.
Now realizing that I had more to live for. I had to get Joseph out of here and back to Nightingale.
thinking of Nightingale makes me think of William. But he was busy with Erica to worry about me. I started to replay our time in my head. I started to cry when I remembered the kiss.
"Come on, Elena, we need to leave before he comes back."
I shook my head. "Okay, I've got to get this chain—" he took it off! How?! I pull my dress up and all I saw was were the blood was starting to dry. "How—"
"There's no time let's go." I follow him and he leads me out of the hole. "Where to now?"
"We're going to have to get out of this place."
"How? We were blindfolded."
"I wasn't. Since I was the son I didn't have to be blindfolded."
"Then how did you get here." I asked.
"When my mother and sister was sent off towards Nightingale. I over heard that night that they were planning to kill the Prince and make Erica into their personal slave."
I gasped. "That's horrible! We have to warn William and Erica right away!"
"You call the Prince by his name?"
"Oh, I- well we are actually friends. Sort of." I blushed.
"Come on then. We've have to get out of here quickly."
I silently follow him out of the tunnel and into a dark hallway. There were a million of doors.
There was no way we were going to get out of here but I just followed Joseph.
He led us down an endless darkened hallway. It seemed like we were walking in place.
I sighed, "this is hopeless. We're never going to get out of here."
"We will. Just trust me. The way out is this way."
I sighed heavily and shook my head.
"They're gone!" A voice came from down the way we came.
"Joseph!"
"They went this way!"
"Joseph!" I cried out.
"After them!"
"Joseph—"
My mouth was covered and jerked into a corner.
"Shh. They'll hear you."
Tears were streaming down my face, was taking over and I knew that I was soon to be dead.
