My ancestors walked with pride
Down paths the world attempts to hide
My ancestors are the root of every people
Though HIS-tory tries to deny
Our queens had their children stripped from their arms
And given their slave owners child to give their nipple to suckle upon
They cried their pain out at night
Prayed till their knees would bleed with the breaking of light
To work in the field...
Singing with a smile on their face
With one thought
It won't always be this way
Maybe not today
Maybe not tomorrow
But one day they will pay for treating us this way
Our Kings were stripped of their land and their people
Lost, they were
Told they were of no people
Told they were less than a man
Can you imagine the pain our Ancestors had
And on their backs
Through their tears
They built this land
Always having hope for a better day
Endlessly seeking to make better ways
Working together to break free
Leaving behind all the pain and misery
This is us...you and me
Why are we so blind to see
Too concerned about the dollar earned
When we are still oppressed
Calling yourself blessed
When you sister and brother are in distress
Your version of help is for them to get over it
Move on with it and let it go
When our history tells us
That's not the way for us to succeed
This is not the way for our people to grow
This is not how we broke our chains from long ago
Here we are still dealing with the issues of our past
Yet won't recognize the ways to overcome
In between the lines
Written by the blood of our ancestors hands
