Somehow he was always the last one to show his face, always staying behind making sure everything was perfect, and tonight nothing was different. He was dedicated, passionate, and indescribably handsome.
Kevin and I had already got back to the hotel after another successful Nitro showing, treating ourselves to a few drinks. I still had my shirt on, and my high waist jeans after I valeted the duo down to the ring tonight.
"So, I was wanting to talk to you tonight?" I took another smoke from my cigarette, then stomped it out on the ground, exhaling the smoke one last time.
"Yeah?" I took a quick swig of beer to clear my mouth, then looked up at Kevin to see what he wanted.
"I know Scott will be back soon, but there is something I've been meaning to say." He stopped, cutting himself off as he went to talk again, his eyes showing his deep thought as to what to say next.
"Just spit it out Kevin." I reached across and grabbed my leather jacket, throwing it over my shoulders to prevent the chilly air hitting my skin. I checked my phone quickly in my bag, seeing if I had anything from Scott, but there was nothing as of yet. He always text to say when he was leaving, he was adorable like that, wanting to make sure I was there to greet him with a big kiss when he got here.
"The thing is, Scott's been doing some planning for a while, he wants to do something special for you Joli, but I don't know if I can let him." Just the thought of something special made my heart beat a little faster, I didn't like the sound of a surprise at all.
I pulled out another cigarette and lit it up, relying on it like a crutch, trying to steady the panic that was beginning to set in. "What is it?" I asked. I prayed Kevin would tell me, he knew me better than anyone, he knew what hurt and what didn't, and that I more than anyone else, hated surprises.
"Joli, I really can't," he protested, "but let me tell you one thing, I really, really like you, and I know this is probably the wrong time, but I can't divert my feelings any longer." I let out a huge sigh, shuffling back slightly on the bench. Kevin stared right at me, with those tempting eyes, fiddling with the ends of his hair to try and compose himself.
"You know, I liked you Kevin, once upon a time, but I'm dating your best friend, we're happy. If only you'd said something sooner. I can't hurt him, not now, not ever, he's-"
"-he is going to propose." I choked back a little on the smoke, staring at him with wide eyes. "He thinks it's a good time to ask you to marry him Joli, that's the big surprise."
"But I'm not ready for marriage, not yet anyway, I thought he knew that." I ran my hand through my hair, wracking my brain for some sort of indication as to what to do. We'd always agreed on the five year rule, allow ourselves to really get to know each other first.
"Joli, you've seen me at my best and my worse, as Vinnie Vegas and as Kevin Nash, you know me, and deep down I think you know we'd be good together." I could hear the hope in his voice, the excitement at what could be, or what could've been. "Just think about it for a second, is Scott really what makes you happy, is he the one that makes your heart skip a beat?"
I lived a great life with Scott, I truly was happy, but could my life have been happier with Kevin? He was hilarious, and whilst he wasn't exactly rebellious, my goodness he was edgy. Scott was similar, but different, he had a few more issues, baggage if you will.
"-Joli, are you even listening to me?" I looked up at Kevin, shaking my head, snapping out of my imaginary conflict. "I was just telling you," he sighed, "about how much I'd love and care for you." He paused taking a deep breath, gritting his teeth, "but clearly Scott's more important to you." He looked down at the ground, taking a huge sip from his beer as a sign of his dejection.
"If you want to know, I was thinking about us, the life we could live together, what sets you apart from Scott, why I like you too." His eyes lit up once again, like a puppet whose emotions I was toying with.
"Joli, you've said it yourself, you're happy, and whilst I love to know I have that place in your heart, Scott is my best friend too. Everyone knows Jolene, but I know Joli, and I know what a good soul you are, and how big your heart is." He placed his hand down on the bench, so I reached across and grabbed his hand, squeezing it gently.
"I want you to know your special, and I know you would have made me happy. You and Scott both make me happy, and nothing will ever change that, when I came to Nitro I was lonely, but you two took me in and looked after me."
"We could have an incredible time together Joli." I nodded over at him, agreeing completely.
"I know, don't make me feel any worse, but Scott's going to propose, I can't break his heart." For the first time he didn't even look sad, like he'd finally understood, we could have been good, we could have had something special, but the time had passed.
"I expect Scott will be back any minute, put that smile on your face." I could feel the guilt inside of me, but what could I do? I reached into my bag, switching my phone on to see he text ten minutes ago.
"Yeah, he will, any second now." He nodded, sliding his hand out from underneath mine, allowing it to hit the cold wood of the bench.
"You know when you go to AC/DC?" I nodded, pulling my hair out of my face. "That's when it is, just try and act surprised. I know you don't want to endure a surprise, so there it is."
Thank you for doing that," I smiled, sliding out from the bench. "I'll see you later." I waved leaving him on the bench with my can of beer, putting my cigarette out as I walked into the lobby.
I stood outside the front, waiting until I saw the familiar white car pull up, running over and opening up the door. "Hey dumpling." I leaned across and held onto Scott's cheeks, kissing him passionately, taking him aback.
He pulled away from me first, jumping out of the car. "I don't think I've ever seen you so happy to see me," he smiled, kissing the top of my head.
"I'm just happy to see the man I love," I whispered, pulling him straight into the hotel and into our room.
