I'd never really had a proper thanksgiving before, we'd gathered a couple of times at work, but as for family, this was a first.
Ric had invited us all round for a mass get together to celebrate, his house nearly full. As soon as we arrived Charlotte was taken from us to help the girls in the kitchen, whilst me and the little man were taken into the living room where the American Football played.
"Here is the handsome devil," her uncle spoke, standing up and opening his arms out wide.
"Here I am indeed," I teased, stepping in and hugging him, hearing his light giggle in my ear.
"I meant this little cherub." He took Reider in his arms, raising him up into the air. "And you young man you're going to grow up into a Patriots fan for sure, just like your great uncle."
I could hear a few groans from around the room from Charlotte's cousins and nephews, shouting out different teams I'd barely even heard of.
We all sat around for a while, the scent of the turkey roasting in the oven slowly wafting through into the living room. As much as I wanted to sit and watch the sports my main focus was Reider being passed around by everyone all cooing over him.
"Dinner will be five minutes," a voice called out past the door. I was handed Reider back, his finger poking straight at my nose like it always did.
"You hungry?" He looked at me in bemusement, not a clue as to what I was saying.
I took him to the table, seating him in the high chair, sitting beside him. One by one the girls walked in too, placing plates upon plates of food on the table. "It smells delicious," Ric said from the top of the table.
Charlotte eventually came out and walked over and kissed the top of my head. "Looking good handsome," she whispered into my ear, walking past Reider, messing the little bits of hair on the top of his head. She sat down beside him, pulling an adorable face at him.
"Alright, I shall carve the meat and then we will feast." I sat at the table, not really sure as to what was happening. I didn't know the rules or the rituals, I was Irish after all.
All Reider wanted was his food, bouncing his plastic fork on the little table to his seat. "Just like his father," Charlotte teased beside him. A few chuckles came from around the table, as I leaned forwards and glared at her, with a hint of a small smirk.
"You're mean." I was broken by the sound of a knife hitting the table, Ric taking the turkey out in one go. Pieces were passed around, landing on different plates until we all eventually found meat on our plate.
"Flair family, I want to go around the table one by one like we always do, and say what we are all thankful for." I could see a few faces struggle to think, but as Reider giggled as timely as he always did, I knew my answer straight away.
We carried on round until we finally reached Charlotte. "I'm thankful for everyone sat around this table, for Eric, and for my son. What about you Reider?"
His eyes lit up at the sound of his name, looking around for some sort of indication as to why he was being called. "He's thankful for food by the looks of it." My little joke got a few laughs from around the table, nearly acceptance I'd judge.
"I'm thankful for family, every single one of them." I didn't want to go on too long, mainly feeling some were still judging me, and others desperate for food.
The last few went until we'd finally reached the end, all of us picking our cutlery up, simultaneously digging in, except Charlotte.
She sat and cut all of our little boy's food up, trying to see if he'd be able to do it himself. I watched her closely, never wanting to get in the way, feeling very guilty, but nonetheless tucking into the massive feast before me.
"This is delicious ladies," I said, speaking up in silence. They all smiled, thanking me for my compliment, a few men grunting in agreement with their mouths full.
We all eventually finished, pushing our plates aside, barely able to move by how full we were. Reider sat and stared at me, giving me a knowing look that he was not prepared to sit and wait any longer.
"If you'll all excuse me, I'm going to take this munchkin away from the table and find him something to do." I picked him up, carrying him in my arms out into the front room, opening up the door in the hope of some fresh air.
I placed him down into a crawling position, moving the door back to reveal a blanket of white snow laid out on the ground. "Guys! It's snowing!" I shouted through, watching my son already fall face first into it.
All the chairs screeched, excitable noises escaping them all as they came over to the door. I ran over and sat by Reider, rolling up a couple of snowballs.
They all piled out, ignoring the frosty cold weather, messing around in the snow. Charlotte stepped out, waving down at Reider. I held back my chuckle, raising my two arms in the air, hitting her waist with two balls, hearing her squeal.
"What the hell!" She yelled, her temper dying down when she saw Reider applauding me in the snow. She came over and picked him up, laying him right down properly.
I took his left limbs and she took his right, moving him around a little to create the perfect baby snow angel.
I sat in the snow, picking it up and dropping little snowflakes in between my fingers, looking around the garden at all the smiling faces.
I'd never imagined that I would be accepted into such a warm and loving family, be blessed with Charlotte in my life, and my goodness was I most thankful for my little boy who'd come into my life.
