Raylan's POV

I pulled into the familiar driveway of Paisley’s house. I can’t tell you how much I’ve been here. Her house has been basically mine since we were little. I wasn’t getting the normal feeling of driving up to her house. I usually couldn’t wait to pull my boots off and go lay on her bed with her. I honestly didn’t know if I could face her. My truck way entirely too loud to turn around and go back. I hated that this would be the last time I’d talk to her for awhile. I’d have to put some space in between us to get over her. She was my whole life.

I saw her coming toward me. It was in slow motion, except this time, I wasn’t even happy. Used to, even if she smiled at me, everything bad in my day slipped away. This time, however, nothing moved. Nothing gave me butterflies or made me want to hug her. What had I felt before for her? Love or Comfort? At this point, I wasn’t sure.

As I got out of the truck, she flung herself on me. I smelled her hair the way I always did. Did it always smell that dull? When I hugged her back, she noticed. I sat her down and took her in what felt like the first time. Her blue eyes weren’t the color of the sky anymore, they were repetitive. It felt like they belong to so many other girls. I realized this wasn’t going to be easy without hurting her feelings.

“Baby boy, what’s the matter? I’ve never seen you like this.” Ugh, this was going to be hard. I led her into the barn this way she could be alone. It was just us and the horses.

“We have to talk…” I stated, but didn’t stop. I knew if I did, it would be over. “Something happened today that has changed my life forever. Please, don’t look at me like that. I’m healthy, no one died.”

She took a look at my eyes and kissed me. This time I didn’t put my hand under her chin as I always did. This was different and she knew it. Her eyes filled up with tears. She knew, and I knew she knew.

“You can’t belong to anyone else. I’m yours… I’m your mate…” her breath seemed hard to find.

“I’m sorry Pais, you’re not… I, more than anyone else in the world, thought you were, too. We have never been around other people except for this small town. We couldn’t have known. Our parents brought us up together. We’ve never known any differently. If I could change it and make you her, I would, but I can’t… What’s done is done.” I could see her shaking violently. Her whole world was crashing down. I didn’t know what to do. I felt nothing for her in the loving way. I felt compassion; this is true, but nothing other than that. Our love was over the minute I laid my eyes on Ocie. I didn’t love her yet, but I knew I would eventually.

“I’m going to ask that you keep this secret. This means that not even your parents. Mating her won’t be easy.” She cringed away at mating her.

“You’re just going to leave now?” her eyes were filled with pain. I had no idea why I was acting the way I was. I knew I had to leave. There were things that needed to be done.

“I’m sorry, Paisley. Like I said nothing can stop this. I feel for you. I really do, but I have nothing to offer you.” finishing, I gave her a kiss on the forehead (which pained me to do) and turned to get into my truck.

“You’re not staying for dinner Raylan!?” Mrs. May called out for me.

“No, I’m sorry. Pack business!” I called back before jumping in my truck. Now it was time to call a meeting. I needed all hands on deck.
