When I awoke, it was to the sounds of birds who were singing like crazy somewhere outside the window. They were not singing alone. I heard humming in the room. It sounded like someone humming one of those pop lovey dovey songs that just made me feel nauseas when hearing it. I sat up on the bed and pulled the long strands of hair that had fallen in front of my face during my restless sleep out from my eyes so I could see who it was responsible for my early morning agony. I found a girl standing in front of the other bed dressed in a pair of light blue faded jeans and a bright yellow T-shirt. With every hum, she shook her ass to it. Her long black curly hair swung along with her hips and ass as I noticed she was busy unpacking one of her many bags she had brought with. It did not take her long to notice me sitting up awake and staring at her. Her naturally brown tanned completion went red in the face at once. She obviously was not used to strangers witnessing her weird butt twitch thing she called dancing. Her dark brown eyes lit up though very quickly which made her sort of thick and very black eyebrows stand up and out at the same time.
"Finally! You are awake!" The girl said. Her voice was far too loud for me, someone who had an awful sleep last night. She stepped up to me and swished out her one hand abruptly to shake mine. Her long bright yellow nails made me cautious about even daring to shake her hand at all. It was all about the first impression and seeing that I did not want to be rude to someone who ultimately was going to be my roommate for the rest of the year, I decided to be as nice towards her as possible by just stretched out my hand and shaking her's carefully. "I am Carmen. Your roommate. Pleased to meet you." The girl said, introducing herself while shaking my hand to the point where I felt my arm's joints were going to pop out if she shook any harder. I made the shaking a brief affair as I broke free from her hold, trying not to come across as rude.
"I am Savannah." Was all I said as I returned my arms to my lap. This girl was just too excited and happy for my liking. I tried not to show her that it was actually bothering me. I was shocked at myself to see how nice I was trying to be towards someone as quirky and peachy as this girl. She released my hand just in time and turned to carry on unpacking her bags, but that did not stop her from continuously turning back around to me to talk. This chick was clearly absolutely oblivious to my miserable and dark demeanor. She was just too happy.
"You got a gorgeous name and you look so good for someone that has just woken up. Your hair especially. How did you get that right?" Carmen said while folding some of her items and placing them in the drawer nearby. This new roommate of mine did not give me a chance to speak let alone answer her question. She continued blabbering on. I'm not sure if I heard everything she was saying. Her mouth was moving like a motor and I had to wonder if she was even taking a moment to breath during each word she spoke. "I was named after my grandmother. Carmen Delgado. She was a real feisty Latino. My mom married an Englishman though which is why my surname is Henderson. My mom believed I was just as feisty as my grandmother." Carmen blabbered on. If she really must know. My name was given to me by my dad. He used to tell me every birthday how he stumbled across that name. He apparently had a dream when he was touring Europe after he had completed High school. In the dream he saw a beautiful woman walking across a bed of wild flowers and when he asked the lady for her name, she whispered in his ears 'Savannah'. From that night onwards he fell in love with the name and vowed to call his first daughter Savannah. Seeing as I was his first and only daughter, I found that name absolutely perfectly. One thing about me that my mom had absolutely nothing to do with my mom. One thing she could not taint with her vile touch. Carmen continued on with more of her stories on how when she was barely six months old she started crawling because she was so feisty she refused to be carried around everywhere. I believed she was telling me a farfetched story, but before she could not be stopped by me. Something else caught my attention then. I saw my set of keys to the room sitting on top of my bedside drawer. That was odd. It was then that I also started asking myself another question. The door was locked last night and the keys were left inside so how did Carmen get inside? Even with her own set of keys, she would have struggled with my keys that had been left in the lock.
