"Oh my gosh Rose, take off the jacket!" Hannah said while she parked the car. I was wearing a huge navy blue coat to cover my dress. This was the first dance I was attending this year so I can admit that I was a bit nervous."I'm sorry, I'm just a bit freaked out here," I mumbled.
"Listen, it's going to be okay." Hannah reassured me. I nodded my head. "Come on!" She said pulling me by the hand closer to the music.
"Wait!" I stopped moving, and stood still. "Remember our parents want us to be back at my house by 12, okay? I don't want my dad coming through these doors on military alert." I said setting my alarm for 11:45pm.
"Alright, Now give me the jacket so we can check it." Hannah said, holding out her hand. I started at her hand for a while and sighed. I sighed and gave her my jacket and placed my mask on. I took a few deep breaths before Hannah walked away in front of me. I followed her lead, and made it to the staircase.
Hannah was waiting at the bottom of it, her back was to me. "Rose, what are they all staring at?" Hannah asked, and then turned to look at me. Her eyes were wide, and she smiled at me. Suddenly a giant spot light beamed on me.
I walked down the stairs to Hannah, and once I reacher her I smiled while she smiled as well and touched my arm, trying to calm me down. I only nodded at her. "Any guy would have be completely insane not to like you, all right?" We walked to the middle of the dance floor.
"Hopefully, one of us is able to get their prince charming," I whispered in her ear.
"Yea, if Sheri doesn't try to get to him first," Hannah muttered, "But I'm going to be standing right over here. Okay?" She was walking towards the bar as I looked around to see everyone dancing and enjoying themselves.
"Woah, so beautiful," someone muttered as I turned around to see Montgomery standing there, " A beautiful Rose, trying to hide her beauty."
"I am not really in the mood for this," I replied trying to walk off until he grabbed me. I gasped, and he bent me backwards. "I'm thirsty. I gotta get some water," I said to him. "Water? I going to get you something better," as soon as his grip loosened, I sighed as he ran off to to the punch bowl.
I don't even fit in this crowd...
"Rose?" I heard another voice ask me from behind me. I turned around, and there stood Jeff Atkins. Though he wasn't in much of a costume smiling. "H-Hey Jeff?" I questioned back, "I'm sory. This was really a big mistake. I've got to go!" I carefully lifted up my dress so I didn't trip on it, and started walking in the opposite direction.
"Wait, wait!" He called from behind me. He caught up with me easily. "Wait. It's not a mistake," He said. I rolled my eyes, it was a mistake. "You should be here with your girlfriend." I tried to walk off until he grabbed my arm and prevented me from walking.
"Listen-" Jeff started until Montgomery came up beside me with a drink, what wasn't water. "Jeff Atkins always there to be by your side," He said, before walking off. I took that opportunity to walk off as well in the direction I was going while he followed me outside.
"Jeff please...stop," I muttered, "I liked it when we were just keeping our distance." I continue to walk off until he grabbed my arm and pulled me back and shook his head to that. "It's over," He told me, it sounded truthful. "Please tell me that you didn't end it because of-"
"I ended it because I know there is something between us, even though we were ignoring each other. I still think about you 24/7! There is just something about you Rose, something pure, something real, and I love everything about you." Jeff yelled.
"What..." I muttered.
"That day we went to the diner after my game, I was so upset when you friend zoned me!" Jeff said out of frustration, "I though of us being something more than friends and the way we connected was something that I knew was real and that is something no other girl has even known about me."
"Come on, Jeff...You're one of the top baseball players at our school and not to mention on of the heartthrobs that every girl is trying to get close to? You can't want someone like me,"
He rubbed his hand through his hair, and sighed. "But I want someone like you," He told me. I raised my eyebrow, folding my arms over my chest. "Then who are you?" I asked him.
"At school I am seen as the high school baseball player and guy struggling in US history trying to get the best grades to stay on the team. But when I talk to you, hang out with you,-." He paused, to look at me. "I'm the guy I wanna be," He finished. I could only stare at him. "Give me a chance to be that guy," He said.
A chance? "Join me for a stroll outside," he held his arm out for me. "You really should be getting back to your date," I told him.
He walked over to me, and put his hands through mine, lacing our fingers with one another. "I pretty sure she is more concerned about her appearance to pay attention to me," Was his response. I couldn't help but smile slightly but something about this was wrong.
