Eight

When we started school, things were a little awkward. We all walked onto the campus together and earned stares from everyone.

I stood close to Jesse, him holding my hand tightly, and I had Rose on my other side. "This is freaky," Rose muttered, standing close to me.

"I know," I muttered.

"You got this," Jesse murmured in my ear. I looked up at him, and smiled. We entered the building, and just got more stares. I stuffed my things into my new locker, and Jesse put his stuff on the top shelf, since he could reach it.

"What's with the glasses?" Some kid snickered as they walked by. I looked over, and noticed they were talking about Gage, who got his Father's old round rimmed glasses.

Another kid who walked by "accidently" spilled his coffee all over Gage, which made the other kids laughed. "Hey watch it," I yelled.

"I think they did it on purpose," Jesse whispered.

"Well I know that," I snapped, "But next time you do that, you'll have to answer to me!"

The kid stopped, and looked at me. "I'm scared," He laughed. I narrowed my eyes, and charged towards him with my fist in the air. His eyes widened, and flinched before I could even hit him. Lucky for him though, Jesse was right there, and able to hold me back.

"Watch it Mae," He hissed in my ear.

The kid laughed with his friends. I ignored him, and turned around. "You alright Gage?" I whispered.

"Fine," He muttered.

"Dur dur," The kid laughed, and that did it. I spun around quickly, and slammed the side of my fist into his face. "Oh, crazy new girl," He yelled, holding his face.

"Watch it," I spat.

"Maeve," Jesse yelled, grabbing my arms, and holding them to his chest. He looked at me with his cold black eyes. I could feel him trying to get into me, and trying to get me to notice that he was angry. I had to look away though, and since I was feeling weak, I looked at the kid to regain my strength. His hurt face made me stronger, and made me want to laugh.

The bell rang, and everyone walked away. Gage stopped and looked at me, my arms still held to Jesse's chest. "Thanks Maeve," He whispered.

"Don't worry Gage," I told him, "I've got your back." That made him smile, and he gave Jesse a fleeting look before walking to his first freshman class.

Then I was left alone in the hallways with Jesse. I bit down hard on my lip- knowing I was in trouble- and looked down at the ground. "Maeve," Jesse whispered.

"Yes sir?" I asked, as I looked at him with a devilish smile.

"You need to play it cool," He ordered.

"Play it cool?" I sneered.

"You know what I mean," He sighed, "You can't make any more enemies."

"I have enemies?" I asked, cocking an eyebrow.

"You're going to have some soon if you don't relax," He snapped, holding my wrists tightly. Then slowly he grabbed my elbow, and started bringing me closer to him.

"I'm just being myself," I pouted.

"Well tone it down a little," He told me, "And then you can be yourself all you want when we get home."

I rolled my eyes, and he smile down at me. "We're going to be late for class," I whispered.

"I know," He grumbled, and then kissed my forehead. Jesse grabbed my hand and we walked to our first classroom.

The teacher didn't really mind, but he did make us stand in front of the class to introduce ourselves. "My name is Mr. Lovelt," He told us, "And you are?"

I looked at Jesse, and then back at the full classroom. "My name is Maeve Hunter," I announced, "And this is Jesse Gwenn."

"Alright," Mr. Lovelt said, "Jesse why don't you take a seat next to Gabriel. I trust you won't talk since you wouldn't even introduce yourself, and Maeve you can sit in the back with Max. Go ahead, go."

I frowned up at Jesse, and then walked to the back to the one seat that was open. Max smiled brightly at me when I sat down next to him. "Maxwell," He introduced himself, "And you're Maeve?"

"Yup," I answered, pulling out my books.

"Where did you come from?" He asked.

"Ohio," I lied.

"Wow," He said, putting his arm on the back of my chair.

I tried to stifle a smile as I heard Jesse growl from the front of the room. "Excuse me," I snapped, "Why is your hand on the back of my chair like that?"

Max smiled at me, and winked.

"Something wrong Mr. Gwenn?" Mr. Lovelt asked.

I looked up at the sound of Jesse's name and saw that he had his chair turned around, facing me and Max. "Turn around," I hissed, and slowly he turned around.

"What's up with that guy?" Max asked.

"Could you move your hand?" I asked.

"You don't like it?" He asked, leaning close to me.

"Excuse me," I snapped, "Could you move? And fast?"

Max narrowed his eyes, but leaned away a little.

With Max out of the way, I was able to focus on Mr. Lovelt's teachings. He liked to give lectures, and write on the white board. Every time he turned around to white board everyone would murmur to each other.

I started scribbling some notes in my copy book, when I started bouncing my leg up and down. I normally did that when I was impatient, like now when the clock seemed like it had stopped moving.

That was when Max put his hand on my thigh to 'stop it from shaking.' When I looked over at him, he was smiling at me. I made sure Mr. Lovelt wasn't working before I slapped him in the face. "What was that for?" He growled.

"Don't touch me," I snapped.

Max opened his mouth to talk, but was staring at Jesse, who was stalking towards us. "Dude," Max breathed, but that was before Jesse started dragging Max's chair out, and then pinned him against the wall.

"Jesse," I snapped.

"How dare you touch her," He spat through his teeth.

"Jesse," I cried.

"Mr. Gwenn," Mr. Lovelt yelled.

Jesse grabbed Max by the neck, and held him against the wall. I jumped out of my chair, and tugged on Jesse's arm, but he wouldn't stop. "Jesse," I screamed, and it finally snapped him out of it.

He dropped Max to the floor, and started breathing heavily. He looked down at the gasping Max, and then turned his gaze to me. "What's happening?" He whispered his eyes sorry and pleading.

"Mr. Gwenn the principal's office," Mr. Lovelt yelled his face red.

Jesse looked at me with sad eyes, and then stormed out of the room. Max stood up, and got back in his chair. "That dude is crazy," He laughed, rubbing his throat.

"Watch it," I spat, and then stood up, "Mr. Lovelt, may I go to the office? I need to talk this out with Jesse and the principal. Some personal matters."

"Go ahead," Mr. Lovelt grumbled, and I left the classroom.
