[BEN COOK]I rolled over in the bed, grabbing for Ben's torso but coming up with cold sheets. I flexed my fingers, stretching out my toes, and yawning. I patted a hand down, attempting to find him if he'd been sleeping on the very edge of the bed. When I came up with nothing, I squinted open my eyes and peered around the room. The morning light was peeking through the blinds, creating patterns on the floor and the sheets. I heard crying from the room next door, and someone singing softly.
I attempted to pull myself up from the bed, my elbows cracking the process. I tugged on one of Ben's hoodies lying on the floor, and pattered down the hall. The door was cracked open to the nursery, allowing me to peek through without bothering them. He sat in the rocking chair, cradling Violet to his chest. Tears traced her cheeks, but with the mixture of Ben's rocking and his singing, she was slowly falling back to sleep with a smile on her face.
I slowly stepped into the room, Ben glancing towards me. His smile grew as I sat on the arm of the chair, circling my fingers through Violet's hair. "Sorry if I woke you," Ben whispered, leaning up to kiss my cheek.
"You're okay," I replied. "Thank you for getting her."
"Of course. You looked peaceful, and I didn't want you to have to move, so I shot up to get her." Ben stood from the chair and carefully Violet back into her crib. He leaned into the frame, allowing me to hug him entirely from behind.
"She's beautiful," I mumbled against his shoulder. "Has your eyes."
"Your button nose," he turned and tapped his finger against my nose.
"Ha, thanks," I released myself from his embrace and began skittering down the steps. Ben followed in suite, helping me prepare her bottle for the morning. Once it was finished, we heard her crying again. I quickly ran back up the steps, bottle in hand and arms open to pick her up.
I paced around the room, tapping the bottom of the bottle as she held onto the nipple with her mouth. Ben stood in the doorway and grinned at me, "My two girls."
"Shut up," I blushed, turning away from him. My eyes searched over the picture frames mounted on the wall. My baby bump, the snapshots of her in my stomach, Ben holding her when she first came out. It seemed unrealistic, the two of us having a child.
We were only seventeen when I got pregnant, but I was luckily able to finished high school quickly. We graduated and with the help of Ben's paychecks from his past musicals, we bought a small apartment. Our parents weren't happy at first, but they help out as much as they could now. I was glad they did, as I couldn't bare the thought of giving Biolet up for adoption or not being able to provide her with the best crib and formula.
She finished the bottle and Ben grabbed a rag off the baby changing station. He slung it over his shoulder, grabbed Violet from me, and began burping her. I set up the diaper and baby wipes, ready for the instant she digested her food.
A small burp came from Violet's lips, causing Ben to let out a soft laugh. "Piggy," he ran a hand over her warm back and kissed the top of her head.
I watched intently as he bounced on his toes and shook her lightly about. He turned to me when she finished her process, and she instantly began crying again. I took her from him, laying her down on the patterned fabric of the changing station. That was done and over with soon enough, right when my stomach growled.
"Hungry?" Ben grabbed Violet off the table and held her to his shoulder.
"Very much," I nodded, patting my stomach.
"Go grab a shower and I'll make breakfast." He offered.
"You got her?" I replied.
"Of course," Ben nodded, leaving the room once again.
I showered quickly, changing into sweatpants and a sweatshirt. Ben had Violet sitting in her high chair, stuffed animal in one hand and a blanket in the other. I gave a silly face to her as I made my way into the kitchen, earning an adorable giggle. I snickered and accepted the out held plate from Ben. I kissed him longingly on the lips, sitting at the chair next to Violet. Ben sat across from me, the both of us entertaining Violet as we ate.
After Ben finished, he showered and I took Violet into the living room. I brought out some of her toys, sitting on the floor with her. Being almost a year old, she could sit up properly and had every ability to play by herself. She offered me her toys a few times, but would sneakily take them back from me soon enough.
Ben sat behind me, allowing me sit in between his legs with my back against his chest. He peeked out from behind my shoulder to make a goofy expression at Violet. She giggled loudly, crawling forward to grab at his hands. I turned sideways to allow her to reach him. She sat between us now, holding his thumbs in her fingers and blowing her tongue at him.
"Silly bean," Ben grabbed her and pulled her towards him, blowing a raspberry into her cheek. She giggled once more.
Her laugh faded and she twisted around to see me, "Momma."
Ben and I gaped at her words, tears rimming my eyes. "Did she just-"j
"She just said-"
"Momma!" She grabbed at me and threw herself into my arms.
"You said your first word," I cried, the tears freely falling now. Ben had watery eyes, but held them in and wiped mine away.
"Momma."
