Your mother was best friends with Asahi's, so it was no shocker when it was revealed the two of you were close friends. He was born exactly a year before you, which came in handy for your moms. The two of you quickly became inseparable with each visit your parents made to each other. You knew all of his secrets just like he knew all of yours. You knew each of his weaknesses and vice versa. You knew him like the back of your hand just like he knew you.

In your first year of middle school, your dad was relocated to Tokyo,  which meant you didn't get to Azumane often after that. In fact, the only time you got to see him was when your mom Skyped his, but that was only glimpses of him.

Your last year in Middle School your mother died of cancer. The Skype calls ceased. He came up and comforted you during the funeral. But it was like he suddenly couldn't recognise you. You still had the same chubby cheeks, small frame, and silky (H/C), but he had never seen you so sad. That was the last time you saw him.

Still, he texted you every day, making sure that you were okay and just because he wanted to. For the following weeks, he would text you a good morning, goodnight, and always when he went to have a volleyball match.

The first time you contacted him first was when an awful storm was raging through the Miyagi prefecture. You called him with worry.

"Whats up?" he hummed through the receiver. He didn't even sound shocked that you suddenly called him like this, it seemed more like he was anticipating this.

"Is everything okay down there? The news said that you guys have had rain for three days straight!" your words were rushed, if you had been living down there still, he would have to comfort you for every bolt.

Over the line, you heard him laugh and shuffle somewhat. "Yeah. But I've been so busy that I can hardly believe it! Yesterday at practice I aced every spike, two first years started calling me Volleyball Jesus and said that everyone will be spiked for their sins."

This earned a snort from you, "What an enchanting duo. How did you react?"

"At first it boosted my ego..." his silence earned your laughter.

"Don't tell me, don't tell me." although you found what happened to be ironic, your voice became soothing, "I think I already know what happened today."

"I missed the spike and lost a match for us today." the frown in his voice was so loud that you winced.

"Yah, Asa-chan," it was your turn to hum. Of course, he would beat himself up over this. "It isn't just you wants to work harder. I'm sure your setter is beating himself up over it. He might think it was his fault for not hitting the ball high enough."

There was a heavy sigh on the other side of the call as well as a call for dinner. "Ah, sorry (F/N). I have to go. Take care?"

"You too, okay?" you were disappointed that the call had to end so fast. "Talk to you tomorrow?"

"Of course." with that, the call was ended.

Soon you two had a new routine. You called him before each of his matches and wished him luck and he would call you before bed; it was a lot better than just the texts. After a few weeks of this, you finally decided to have a talk with your father. 

When you made up your mind to have the conversation with him, you thought making him dinner would help get him to say yes. Before doing all that, you cleaned every room in the house, did all the laundry, went grocery shopping, and took the laundry out. This was bound to impress him.
