Ann slipped into her house, and let out a relieved sigh.
One more day of school. One more day until summer. One more day until Ann can hang out with Astrid, not have to worry about studying or homework, going to the pool, and staying up late.
One more day to go.
"Hey, mum!" Ann called out, stepping into the kitchen.
Ann's mum, Melody, held up a finger, speaking into her phone.
"That soon?" Melody said, a frown on her face. "And Astrid, too? Well... I can have Astrid stay the night. And then you can swoop in and grab the both of them. Okay. Mhm. Okay, I'll see you soon. Bye."
Ann watched her mum put down her phone.
Why was Astrid coming over? Tomorrow's the last day of school, and Astrid doesn't go to the same school as Ann...
What was going on lately?
"Hi, hun," Melody said, and Ann was pulled into a hug. "Get yourself a snack, and pack a bag. You and Astrid will be going on a... trip together. So pack food and whatever you'll need."
"Okay, mum." Ann replied, confused on what was happening.
Why did her mum look so worried?
Ann crunched on her chip thoughtfully, the doorbell chiming throughout the house. Ann could her her mum pounding down the hall.
"I've got it!" Melody called out.
After a minute, Astrid stepped into the kitchen, a frown on her dark face. She was shouldering a heavy-looking bag.
"Hey," Astrid said, slipping in the chair next to Ann, swiping a chip.
Ann swatted at Astrid's arm playfully. "Hello. You don't happen to know what's going on, do you?"
Astrid shook her head ruefully. "No, but do I have a sort to tell you..."
