Jason and Jacie had finally made it out of the forest, and were now sitting in a gas station, eating some food they got with Jason's money. Jacie hadn't realized how hungry she was until now. She tried to eat slower, so she wouldn't look like a pig, especially in front of Jason, who probably knew what she was doing anyway.

"How are you holding up?" He asked after a moment of watching her eat.

Jacie finished chewing her hamburger and looked up. "Well, still in pain, but it's a little better."

He nodded, and looked out the window. "I'm really sorry about all of this. Your mother just wanted me to keep you safe. Seems like I made things worse for you."

Jacie shook her head as she thought about her dad. That wasn't his fault, it was the bad guys. Jason was just protecting her.

She quickly wiped a tear away, trying to hide how sad she was. "No, none of this was your fault. I would have died if you hadn't come to the barn."

Jason stayed silent after that, making Jacie worry about him. Why was he taking everything so hard? It wasn't his fault! Jason glanced at the person taking orders, then sighed slightly. "We should probably be on our way. Do you think you're ready?"

Jacie nodded, and stood without shaking or anything to prove that she was. Also, the bad guys were probably tracking them down. It would be best to keep moving.

As they left, Jason kept an eye on everything around them, which made Jacie really nervous. She had known ever since she laid eyes on Jason that nothing would ever be the same for her ever again. But right now, she would just have to suck it up, and do everything Jason told her, for it seemed he was trained very well for situations like this.

Jason found a decent car to "borrow" so their trip to find Jacie's mother could be faster. "Jason," Jacie spoke up after an hour or two of silent driving. "How did you meet my mom?"

He glanced at her, but didn't answer. She swore she saw him cringe when she had asked that. Maybe that was a little too personal? She decided to try something else. "Do you know where mom is now?"

Jason looked at her again, slightly annoyed, then sighed quietly as he stared at the road again. "I'm afraid we have no way to communicate with her. It's best if we just stick to the plan." Then to help comfort her, he added. "Nicky is smart, like you. She can take care of herself."

Jacie blushed slightly at the complement as she nodded in response.

She looked out the car window at all the houses and trees passing by, wondering what her life would be like if her mom had stayed and none of this had ever happened. The only downside to that fantasy, would be never getting to meet Jason. There was just something about him that Jacie couldn't quite grasp, but she knew he would protect her no matter what, and that was what made her feel safe.

He glanced at her for a moment, then cleared his throat slightly. "Jacie."

"Hmm?" She wondered, quickly turning her head towards him.

"I just...," he paused for a while before continuing. "Just promise me that no matter what, you won't run off, okay? I want you to stay near me at all times until we can get this figured out."

Jacie was slightly surprised, but then smiled and nodded. "I would never run away from you. You did save me after all."
