Jason was able to find them a motel miles away. They had to walk through the forest next to the town where the gas station had blown up, and be very stealthy to avoid the bad guys that were most likely still trying to follow them. Jacie would look up at the sky, hoping that no helicopter would be there with a big spot light. She also hoped that her leg would heal faster, so it wouldn't have to be such a nuisance. It would always hurt her when she walked on it, and whenever she moved her leg too fast, it would send a sharp pain throughout her whole leg.
Jason knew she was in pain, and offered to help her walk, but she was determined to walk by herself, no matter how badly she hurt. The boy, he said his name was Kyle, was just tagging along. He wasn't close enough to make it uncomfortable, but he was keeping up with them.
Once it got dark, Jacie was in so much pain that her face was red with effort of trying to walk and trying to keep from crying. She didn't want Jason to carry her again. He was tired and injured too, and it would be way too awkward for Kyle to carry her, if he would that is.
Jason finally forced her to put her arm around him, so he could help support her as they continued on. They finally found the motel, and it seemed safe enough, but Jason was out of money. He hadn't had much before, and some had been in the car. Instead of checking in at the front desk, he snuck them all up to the top floor, and broke into a room that was empty. They would have to wake up really early and get out of there before anyone found them.
Jason obviously did not want Kyle sleeping in there. He didn't trust him at all. Jacie finally told Jason to find another room for him, but Jason seemed hesitant. He finally agreed after thinking it over for a short period of time.
Once Kyle was settled in a room, three rooms down from Jacie and Jason to the left, Jason came back, and bolted the door behind him. "We need to be extra careful tonight. They're close by."
Jacie's heart jumped. "Who are they?"
Jason looked her in the eyes, but he didn't answer. He obviously didn't want to tell her. Instead, he finished making his bed on the floor, and lied down, but Jacie was still sitting up on her bed, staring down at him. "I can't sleep."
Jason sighed. "Do you need a story every night?"
He sounded kind of annoyed. "Well, no, I guess not," Jacie replied awkwardly, and forced herself to lie down on the bed.
There was silence for several minutes, and Jason didn't say anything. Jacie thought he might have fallen sleep. She wished she could fall asleep that fast. She was too afraid to lie down too long. Jacie wanted to get up and move, she wanted to keep running until they got to her mother.
It felt like hours had passed, and Jason still didn't say a word. He was now lying on his back, his eyes closed, but Jacie was still sitting up, the lamp on, staring at him, the door, the window behind her. Her heart was racing, faster and faster. Suddenly, she thought she heard someone trying to get in through the window. That sent her flying off of her bed. She ran, then leaped onto Jason, clinging to him, trembling with fear.
Jason was really startled, and she probably gave him a heart attack. He pushed her off of him, and grabbed her arm. "What's the matter?"
"I'm scared," Jacie said, nearly in tears.
Jason pulled her close to him, his strong arm around her. "I won't let anything hurt you. As long as you're with me, you're safe," he whispered softly into her ear.
That seemed to calm her down, because within minutes, she was asleep. Jason was even more worried now. He didn't want her to be afraid, and yes, he could protect her, but he couldn't really protect her from every single little thing.
Jason glared in the direction "Kyle" was. Maybe he couldn't protect her from everything, but nothing would keep him from trying.
Sorry this took so long to write. I'm working on a novel and I have until December to get it finished. I know this chapter was short, but I promise it will be longer next time, and more exciting. Thanks for reading. Please like and comment if you want to! Thanks for reading!
