Jacie woke up to a bird chirping happily. She felt kind of cold, as if a breeze was brushing against her. When she woke up completely, she realized she was in a forest. Now she remembered.
She nearly burst into tears remembering her dad, but then she realized that her head was resting on something. She looked and saw that she had fallen asleep resting her head on Jason's leg.
He was leaning against a tree, his arms folded and eyes closed. Jacie sat up, and noticed that he had even covered her up with his jacket. She half smiled. He really was a sweet guy, even though it was hard to tell on the outside.
Now that Jacie was up, Jason opened his eyes. "How did you sleep?" He asked.
Jacie rubbed her eyes and turned to face him. "Better than I expected," she admitted. "What about you?"
"I wasn't sleeping," he said, then gave her a concerned look, as if he knew something she didn't. "You cried a lot last night," he looked down. "I'm sorry about your dad."
Jacie looked away, and did her best to keep from crying again. She wasn't sure how to answer, and she knew it wasn't his fault.
She still felt pain in her arm, leg and side. Her head was starting to feel better, but she knew that if they were to survive, she would have to get better soon. Jacie knew her leg would take longer, because it was broken, but she wasn't sure what was wrong with her arm.
She pushed on it, flinching slightly. She lifted her sleeve to reveal some bad bruising. "Let me see," Jason said from behind her.
Without hesitation, Jacie spun around, and let Jason inspect her arm. He had to push on it to make sure nothing was broken, but Jacie could hardly keep from yelping. She bit her lip, and sighed with relief when he was finally done.
"You're very lucky," he told her. "You could have been hurt much worse."
"I think the only broken bone I have is my leg," she said quietly, looking down at it, remembering the awful fall she had when jumping her horse Pegasus. Jacie had to look away. Just thinking about it made her leg throb with pain.
Jason gathered a few more sticks for the fire, and let Jacie keep his jacket to keep her warm. Frost covered the ground from the morning dew.
Once she was warm enough, he sat down, but didn't say anything for a long time. Both of them stared into the fire, watching the flames dance around, and the sparks of burning wood crackle and fly in all sorts of directions.
Jacie finally got enough courage to say something. "What now?"
Jason didn't look at her, but he answered, "First, we have to get you somewhere safe, then we can plan on what to do."
Jacie knew Jason already had some sort of plan, but he just wasn't going to tell her. She sighed. "Are we going to see my mom?"
He glanced at her, but didn't answer.
She took that as a maybe.

Nicky's plane touched down in New York. Now she had to find a way to get one to Kentucky at their meeting point, but she worried that Jason wouldn't make it. Well, she would just have to find out.
Nicky made her way out of the airport to go find some place with a computer, so she could find out if there was a flight that would get her close to Kentucky here. If not, she might need to drive the rest of the way if she was discovered. Airplanes would be too risky if she was caught.
She checked the scheduled flights, and shook her head in disappointment. Driving would have to be the way there. She just hoped that Jason was having better luck than she was.

Jacie helped Jason stomp out the fire, and make it look like they hadn't been there, before they gathered anything they had and were off. It was really hard for Jacie to keep up with her broken leg, but she tried her best. Eventually Jason put her arm around him, and helped her walk until the pain in her leg was so horrible that she had to stop.
"I'm sorry," she said, tears coming to her eyes as Jason helped her sit down. "I don't think I can do this."
"You can't give up now, Jacie," Jason told her. "I'll carry you if I have to, but we will not give up, not now."
"I'm just slowing you down," Jacie sniffled, trying to wipe away her tears.
Jason knelt down next to her, and looked her in the eyes. She saw determination, and she could see in his eyes that he cared for her. He smiled a little, which somehow calmed Jacie, and she smiled back. She wasn't sure what it was, but there was just something about Jason that helped her stay calm, and she had a feeling that everything would most likely be okay once they met up with her mom.
"The whole reason I came was to protect you and get you to your mother," he told her. "And that is what I'm going to do."
With that, he grabbed Jacie behind her back and under her legs, and lifted her into the air, holding her bridal style. He was really determined. Jacie felt bad for making him carry her. But honestly, she was so tired, and her leg hurt so bad it was really hard to keep the tears from flowing any faster.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head on his chest. For the first time in two days, she felt completely safe, like there was nothing that could hurt her. She closed her eyes, and smiled.
Sorry this took me so long. I know this chapter isn't that exciting, but it will get way better in the next chapters. Hope you enjoyed, and if you have any suggestions on how I can make it better, please tell me. Thanks!
