Jason hadn't said a word since he captured Kyle. Nor did Kyle say anything as they trudged on through the forest very quickly. Jacie was afraid to speak at all, for fear of getting yelled at or something, so she thought it best to stay quiet and out of the way.

They soon came upon a camp of some kind, with two pitched tents and a nice warm campfire. A man and a woman sat on two chairs, chatting happily. They looked like hunters.

Jason made Kyle and Jacie lay low. They would have to sneak away to remain unnoticed, but Kyle had other ideas. "Help!" He yelled, causing Jason to roughly cover his mouth, but it was too late.

The two people grabbed their rifles and had already spotted them because of Jacie's bright purple shirt. "Hey!" The man shouted. "Show yourselves or I'll shoot!"

Jason slowly stood up, Jacie following his lead. The couple looked concerned to see a grown man with two young kids in the middle of the forest, and one of them was handcuffed. "Let the kids go," the woman warned, assuming Jason was some kind of kidnapper.

Jason slowly let go of Kyle's arm, who flung himself before the couple's feet. The woman quickly stooped to help him while the man kept pointing the gun at Jason and Jacie. "And the girl," the man commanded.

Jacie's heart jumped. She'd rather stay with Jason than them! What were they going to do unless people got hurt? To Jacie's great astonishment, Jason pulled her in front of him, knowing they couldn't shoot without harming her. "I know this looks bad, but it's not what you think," Jacie said out of the blue. "He's not hurting us."

"He beat me up, and that little brat helped him!" Kyle burst out yelling, acting terrified. "They stole all my money and all of my valuable possessions! See? That girl is wearing my grandfather's watch!"

Apparently that was enough to convince the couple, because they advanced on Jason and Jacie, ready to shoot at any moment. Jacie's whole life flashed before her eyes. She hoped their whole journey didn't have to end this way!

She then felt a gun press against her head as Jason wrapped an arm gently around her neck. "Don't come any closer," Jason warned, and slowly backed away with Jacie pretending to be afraid. "One more step..."

The couple hesitantly lowered their weapons, worried Jason would hurt the child. Leaving Kyle, Jason forced Jacie to run for her life. In moments, she heard a few gunshots, but she didn't look back until Jason fell to the ground.

Only then did she realize poor Jason had been shot, again! Jacie dove down next to him and helped him sit up. He was still conscious, but barely, as he held to his side. "Jason! Jason, are you okay?" She began to cry from shock and fear.

"Calm down," Jason said gently, cringing when he moved. "I'm gonna need your help on this one, all right?"

Jacie shook her head and started to sob. "I don't know what to do."

Jason grabbed her arm. "I'll tell you, but you need to hurry!"

Jacie hesitantly nodded and began following Jason's instructions. She used the rest of the fresh bandage and her own plaid shirt to make another bandage for Jason. Luckily she was wearing an undershirt.

Jason said that would have to do until he could get proper cleaning supplies and bandages. Jacie was worried there wouldn't be anyone near enough for Jason to walk to before he passed out or something. But he insisted on continuing, using Jacie for support. He was very strong, but he now had four bullet wounds. One was infected and the others needed cleaning and proper bandaging. Jacie was afraid that if they didn't find someone soon, he might not make it.
