Jacie hadn't realized that she'd even fallen asleep. She woke up in a truck. It was her dad's truck. Her hero was driving, and her dad was in the passenger seat. Jacie slowly sat up, trying to be quiet because they were talking, but they suddenly stopped when her bare hand made a little squeak on the leather seat.
"Are you okay, Jacie?" Her dad asked, and looked back at her. "You've been asleep for hours."
She nearly gasped. He had the biggest black eye she'd ever seen. "I'm fine... what happened?"
"You fell asleep, we didn't have time to wake you," her hero said.
"He carried you out of the house," Jacie's dad added. "I was still kind of out of it, and then suddenly found myself in here with him driving. I'm sorry we didn't get your pills. I know your leg is hurting."
Jacie nodded slowly, slightly embarrassed for falling asleep. She hadn't gotten much sleep last night, because she had been worrying about her mom, but now her mom actually sent someone. Jacie just hoped that she was all right. Right then, she realized that she didn't know her hero's name.
"Sir," Jacie said quietly, surprised he'd even heard her when he slightly glanced at her for a split second in acknowledgement. "What's your name?"
He seemed a bit hesitant, and glanced at Jacie's dad before answering, "Jason."
Jacie then remembered the horses. "Dad!" She shouted, making him jump before he quickly looked at her again. "What about the horses?"
"I'll have to call our neighbor to take care of them," her dad replied.
"No," Jason said.
"No?" Jacie glared.
"It's too dangerous for anyone to go there," he told them. "They could still be around."
"So what?" Jacie scoffed. She would have gone back herself, but she knew it'd be too dangerous, and that Jason would probably die before he let her go. "They're after me, not our neighbor. Dad, call him. Tell him to remember to give Pegasus his special oats in the tack closet every morning."
Jacie's dad nodded and pulled out his phone, but Jason grabbed it from him and pulled over. "Call him outside, then destroy your phone. We can't risk having them track us. They could be listening, so don't give any information about where we are."
Jaciei's dad slowly nodded, taking his phone back. He hopped out of the truck, walked a few feet away, and called their neighbor. Seconds later, he threw it on the ground, smashed it with the heel of his shoe and hurried back to the truck.
Once the door closed, Jason started driving again, faster this time.
Jacie remembered to put her seat belt on. She knew this was going to turn ugly fast. Those assassins were probably really good at finding their target. Especially if Jacie's mom sent someone like Jason, who can knock someone out with one blow and sometimes a pitchfork, to protect her.
She shivered at the thought of that guy with his leg gushing blood from his wound where the pitchfork had penetrated his skin. Jacie started feeling sick again, and put her hand on her stomach in attempt to make the feeling ease, but it got worse.
Just minutes later, she got this strange feeling, as if they were being followed. Jacie looked behind them, and saw a black SUV right on their tail.
"Jason, I think we're being followed," she whispered, slowly turning her face away from the window.
"I know," he replied, without looking at her. "Don't look back, and leave the rest to me."
Jason suddenly turned a sharp corner to go down a busy highway. Jacie guessed that would make it harder for the SUV to get them, if Jason weaved through traffic just the right way. Knowing that he was good at fighting, she guessed he would be good at driving too.
And she was right.
He was weaving through the traffic so gracefully, and the SUV was falling behind. Jacie was holding onto her seat like her life depended on it, which it probably did, when all of the sudden... BOOM!
There was a loud noise, and Jacie knew that noise all too well. A gun. It shattered the back window of the truck, and she ducked her head. Luckily it had missed her, and her dad's arm. It went straight through the front window.
"Stay down!" Jason shouted.
He didn't have to tell her twice. Jacie laid on her side to stay out of sight from the windows, and her dad ducked, covering the back of his head with his hands. All the honking and people screaming made Jacie's heart race even faster. She hoped no one else was getting hurt.
Jacie wanted to know how close the SUV was, but she didn't want to break Jason's concentration. She glanced up at the windows, and just saw a cloudless blue sky. She couldn't see the road, or any cars. It was all up to Jason.
They took another sudden turn, and this time it was really bumpy. Either they were on a dirt road, or no road at all.
The bad thing about living in the country, was that it was almost impossible to hide, because it was just flat land that goes on for miles. There was no cover. They were completely vulnerable.
There was another loud gun shot, and it grazed Jason's arm, making them swerve. The truck lost traction and flipped over. They rolled at least two to three times before it came to a halt.
Tears were streaming down Jacie's face as she tried to get up, but she was completely upside down. Her dad's arms were limp.
"Dad!" Jacie shouted, but he didn't move. "Dad!"
She could hardly see with all the smoke filling the car. Jacie knew that smell. FIRE! The car was on fire! They had to get out, or all of this would be for nothing.
Jacie heard a door open, and sunlight shone in on her right side. She was so afraid, that she completely ignored the terrible pain in her leg. Now she had pain everywhere. Her head, her arm, her side. She couldn't see with all the tears, but she felt hands unhook the seat belt, and pull her out. It was painful even to move.
The person who saved Jacie lifted her into their arms and bolted away. Her vision started to turn fuzzy black, and just before she passed out she heard a huge explosion, one last word escaping her lips, "Dad."
Sorry I took so long to write this. I've been busy with other stories. Please enjoy!
