Jacie woke with a start when she felt a hand shake her. It was Jason, to her relief, but he had a very serious expression on his face. More serious than usual, an expression that Jacie was afraid of, for she knew it meant they were in trouble.

"What is it?" Jacie whispered in fright, slipping into her shoes.

"Kyle has been captured, but I don't want to take a chance on finding him," Jason explained quietly. "It could be a trap."

Jacie knew he was most likely right, but she felt a need to find Kyle. For some reason, she almost felt responsible for him. "I'm not leaving this room until you agree to save him," she said firmly, planting herself on the bed, arms folded.

"Jacie, my mission is to protect you," he argued angrily, pointing a finger at her.

Jacie glared and slapped his hand away, opening her mouth to argue back.

~oOo~

"My plan is to find anything that might lead to him, some sort of trail," Jason told her several minutes after Jacie had "convinced" him to do so.

She paced back and forth in Kyle's room, until she spotted something shiny in the window sill. It could have been a bomb for all she knew, but went ahead and grabbed it without thinking. It was a golden wrist watch, which she looked over for several moments before spotting some kind of writing on the back of it. She did remember seeing Kyle wearing this the other day as she looked closer at the writing.

It was three, very messy numbers, and it looked as though he had carved them in a hurry. "Five, nine, nine?" She whispered to herself, trying to think what on earth that could possibly mean.

"We have to go," Jason warned. "People are waking up."

Once Jacie was sure that was the only clue in the room, she allowed Jason to lead her to a safe hiding place in the forest. There, she showed Jason the clue. Even he was confused about the numbers, but it was obviously important somehow.

Jason suspected that the kidnappers had driven away with Kyle during the night, so that was a start. Here, you couldn't really go anywhere. Also, judging by many things that Jason didn't explain to Jacie, he supposed they were heading in the very direction that they were to meet Jacie's mother, Nicky.

He was torn between the decision of leaving Kyle and going after him. Jason knew it was a trap, but how would he convince Jacie not to go after him, without telling her all the information they had been protecting her from this whole time? He had quite a while to think about this as they drove towards the meeting point with another "borrowed" car.

Jacie hated stealing cars, but she made Jason make sure that the person who owned it wouldn't be in too much trouble without it.

"Jacie," he finally managed to find his voice.

In turn, she glanced at him as he did her in reply.

"It's too dangerous to go after Kyle," he continued after a long pause. "I can't risk putting you in danger."

Jacie glared and looked away without a reply. She knew in the back of her mind that going after Kyle was too risky, but she just couldn't shake that feeling of responsibility for him.

"So I'm going to leave you with your mother, and go after him myself," he finished, causing Jacie to look at him and grab his arm in alarm.
