Jacie was sure she would have thrown up, but the surprise about her mother sending him made her completely forget about it.

He never sat down. He was always on the move, checking out windows, digging through everything.

"What are you doing?" Jacie glared.

"Do you have guns in the house?"

"My dad is a cowboy, of course he has guns," she told him, then glared again. "But I don't trust you."

"Listen, Jacie, someone out there wants to kill you, and I'm here to keep that from happening. If you don't trust me, fine, but I need to know where those guns are," he said very sternly.

Jacie was hesitant, but she knew this guy probably really was good and was here to protect her. She looked down, feeling bad about going against her promise to her father about not telling anyone where the guns were.

"They're in the basement," she said slowly. "Right when you walk in, to your left is a cabinet on the wall. You'll find them there. The key is under the rug at the bottom of the stairs."

He said nothing more, but made her stand, and led her over to a bedroom with only one window that had the blinds down. He stuck her in there before heading for the basement.

Jacie slowly stood on one leg. She wasn't just going to sit there while he was having all the fun. She slowly hopped to the doorway, but then heard the front door open. Someone had picked the lock and they were inside!

Jacie didn't know how many people were after her. Now that there was actually someone after her again, she hopped as fast as possible to the basement door.

"Sir," she whispered down the dark stairway. "Someone's in the house!"

There was no answer, but all of the sudden, a face appeared in front of hers. It was the man who had saved her. He helped Jacie down onto the stairs, and peeked around the corner, but quickly hid again.

"Don't say anything," he warned quietly.

He slowly closed the door until they could only see light through the cracks. Jacie couldn't see anything much, but she felt a hand grab her arm and he put it over his shoulders to help her get down the stairs.

They finally made it down, but then Jaice heard loud noises from upstairs. It sounded like something broke. She gasped, but the man quickly covered her mouth, and pulled her under the stairs and crouched there with her next to him, his hand still on her mouth.

Jacie held her breath and held as still as possible, ignoring the pain in her injured leg. She had a cast, but it still hurt, the way she was sitting.

They heard the door handle wiggle, then the door opened, flooding the stairway with dim light. Jacie's whole body tensed, even her hero's grip on her arm tightened.

They heard footsteps on the stairs and his shadow passed right over them through the cracks in the stairs. She could hear shuffling, then a big bang that made her jump. The person had punched something metal.

Jacie's hero squeezed her arm slightly. She couldn't tell if he was assuring her that it would be okay, or if he meant for her to stay put. Either way, she didn't move for anything as he let go of her and slowly moved away.

It felt like forever until Jacie finally heard something, but it was a yelp. It sounded like... her dad! She crawled over to where she knew there was a flashlight, and she turned it on and shone it in the place she had heard the noise come from.

Her dad was on the ground, knocked out. Her hero was standing next to him, a glare on his face, but then he looked slightly confused when he realized that her dad wasn't an assassin. He sat on his heels and checked him to make sure he was all right, because he had a talent for hurting people pretty badly with one punch... and a pitchfork.

Jacie crawled over to her dad, ignoring the dirty, dusty floor and the pain in her leg. "He'll be out for a while," her hero guy told her. "He might have a headache when he wakes."

"I didn't know he'd be back this soon," Jacie said, and gently stroked her father's hair that was now slightly messy from their fight. "He probably saw the guy in the barn and ran to the house. He got in through the front door with the extra key."

Jacie's hero grabbed the flashlight from her hand and shone it around until it landed on a dust covered window. The dust was so thick, it wasn't giving any light from outside.

"We need to leave," he told her. "It isn't safe here."

"What about my dad?" Jacie asked.

"We'll have to wait for him to wake up," he said. "Or leave him here."

"No, we are not leaving him here," Jacie glared. "I know my mother sent you to save me, but my dad is in trouble too."

"He's in trouble because you're here," he said.

She glared again. "What do we do then?"

He just looked at her with a slight glare before standing up and walking off over to the shelves. He began to dig in them, probably looking for weapons or something. Jacie noticed that he hadn't unlocked the gun cabinet yet.

She looked down at her dad's dark form. Right that second, she realized how afraid she was. Jacie lied down and rested her head on her dad's chest. The beating of his heart was somehow calming. Jacie knew that someday, they'd be safe again, with the help of her hero.
