I flipped an arm to my side and tangled my fingers in the sheets. I basked in the sunlight that spread its soothing warmth on my skin, but I didn't need its help. My body felt very warm and fuzzy, inside and out. My toes and fingertips were tingling and I couldn't help but smile with a sigh of pure bliss.
For the first time in forever, I had slept without the bother of nightmares, my mind completely unbothered and the thought made me smile further.
I stretched out as far as I could, enjoying my relaxed muscles. I was startled when my hand hit a hard, warm body lying next to me. My eyes shot open with fear.
Please don't be who I think you are. Please oh pretty please. Tell me I wasn't that stupid.
I turned my head as slow as possible, fearing the answer to my question.
FUCK!
His long eyelashes fanned across his high cheek bones, fluttering softly at each breath intake. It was impossible to stop my eyes from snooping, my gaze dropping down to his firm chest. The sight of him so bare and firm made my inside turn to goo again, the images of last night popping up one by one.
Nope, nope, nope.
I shook head vigorously, ah no, ah hell no! I had to get out of here, quickly, before he woke. I quietly shrugged the sheets off of me, regretting the warmth I left behind. I looked around the room, searching for my cloths but was only met with torn up rags.
Well I wasn't wearing that.
After stealing a black long-sleeved shirt that reached my knees and a pair of his tightest boxers, I quietly snuck out of the well-lit room, casting a last glance at my sleeping mate. He was so peaceful, so unaware of what was going on around him that I made a promise to myself to stay as far away from him as possible.
The mate bond was something extremely powerful as shown last night. It made both mates irresistible to each other until they finally decided to mark one another, completing the bond and promising to spend eternity side by side. But that wouldn't happen, that couldn't happen.
This wasn't some sort of fairy tale where I could just meet my mate, fall in love and have his babies. His family killed mine and I couldn't be sure if he had played a part in that. It wasn't because he had told me that he had never met a Wolf before that it was necessarily true.
I had to keep that in mind, stay cold and distant. Otherwise, the plan would fail and all the years of planning would take water. There were promises I had to uphold, debts I had to settle, but most importantly, I had to make things right.
I tore my eyes away and left the apartment, making as little sound as possible. Stepping out, I was hit with a wave of cold air and uneasiness. Wrapping my arms around myself, I tried figuring out where I was. I had spent many years in this city but that was centuries ago, the city as I had learned to know it had been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. I mean, eight centuries was a long time.
The early morning sun didn't procure much warmth to help get rid of my chill. My unfamiliar surroundings weren't helping much either. I had to use my sense of smell instead of my vision to make my way around the city.
As soon as I left the Amory's quarters, I stepped into a busy street crawling with Guards. I quickly stepped back and pressed my back against the brick wall of the closest building. Inching my head forwards, I counted.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
