I woke up to sunlight streaming into the cottage. Reade was still asleep on the floor, but the Dwarfs were all gone. I suspected they had gone to do some fishing. I decided to wait for Reade to wake up, and to seize the opportunity to speak to him about yesterday's events. Meanwhile, I did the washing up.
Some time later Reade stumbled into the kitchen, hair messy. He made to leave when he saw me, but I gently called his name, and he seemed to know what was about to happen. Sighing, he lent against a chair.
"How are you feeling?" I asked, drying a plate. "Ugh," he groaned. "After yesterday, I mean." Reade bit his lip. "Better, now." He was learning fast, it was better to just talk properly than bottle everything up. I used to do that with the Palace's cat. I'm quite sure the cat hated me, but at the time it was just good to imagine someone actually cared. "I want you to know, without the Dwarfs forcing any conversation, that I forgive you." Reade nodded. "Yeah, that was kind of awkward." We laughed. He was slowly letting down his guard. "If you don't mind me asking, what was that about? You getting so worked up over a dress?" "I guess I'm just not used to being able to get new clothes whenever I want. I'm actually really surprised the Dwarfs let you get something at all." Then it hit me. He had got jealous. Jealous that the dwarfs were giving a newcomer more priority than the boy they had raised for over half of his life. "I see," I said. "I totally understand."
"You do?" Reade's eyes widened. "Well, yeah. You think of them like parents, and they were obviously quite strict with you growing up. When I came here, they treated me very well, and I guess it upset you thinking that they liked me more than you. But, trust me, I can see from the way you guys interact, they love you to bits. You have absolutely nothing to worry abou..." I didn't have time to finish my sentence, because the next thing I knew, Reade's lips were on mine. The shock quickly turned into pleasure, as his hands cupped my face and I brought my arms round his waist. His lips were soft, and his breath warm, and in that moment I forgot about everything that had happened before. In the moment, it was just me and him. Until five loud gasps behind us ruined the moment.
We broke apart, both red-faced. The dwarfs stood in silence for a moment, before slowly starting to laugh and wolf-whistle. "Finally!" Skramrak cheered. "Our boy! In love!" What occurred then was lot hugging, and claps on the back, and dancing. We once again danced till the evening, but this time Reade joined in.
In the evening, when I was in bed, I felt a figure creep in beside me and wrap his arms around me. I slept well that night, very well indeed.
