Chapter Twenty-Six: Rooftop// Time Passes So Quickly
She let out a small laugh and tilted her head at me. "You know, life passes by so quickly when you don't think too much about it. You just...spend your time worrying about all sorts of stupid little things, and one by one the days pass by like a flipping calendar and next thing you know, it's been a year. And then two. And three."
She sighed, stretching out her fingers as she leaned back beside me.
"We spent our days being stupid and not thinking much of it. I didn't even question how long he'd be by my side. We were young. The summer holidays passed in the span of a single breath, and the school year started again. We got busy with school, met up less frequently. He still made time for me."
I watched her closely. "There's a 'but' in there somewhere."
She smiled sadly, nodding. "But he'd gained more friends. I mean, obviously. It's not like he was going to stay with me forever. Started going out at night to play basketball with them. It was that guy I mentioned earlier and his group. Drew. Riley. Mason. Augustine."
Her mouth spread into a tight smile. "And there were two girls. One was Riley's girlfriend. Anna. The other..."
Another terse laugh.
"The other was Lyon's. Shannon."
I frowned.
"Everything I wasn't. Tall, gorgeous. Dark hair, the prettiest eyes. Of course he chose her." She blew out a long, slow breath. "There's a special kind of hell when you start to truly get to know someone who you didn't even think twice about, and then all of a sudden, they're this...brilliant little light in your night sky. And you can't stop staring. God, you can't stop staring. He was my sun. I guess I stared too long and got blinded instead."
