Chapter Fifty-Four: Rooftops// The Meaning Of Emptiness

The sky cleared up later. It's funny how some moments, I wanted her back so badly it tore me apart from the inside, and others, I almost forgot she'd gone.

I leaned my head back, letting the occasional raindrop land on my face and mix with the tears. The clouds were pretty.

"Hey Cecilia, I'm being selfish. I still miss you."

I stared so long at the sunlight mixing with the clouds, my eyes blurred and I almost missed it.

Almost.

The light mixed together against the clouds, breaking apart into colorful streaks going everywhere.

It almost looked like....fire.

I stood up, a hand against the wall. "Oh look! It's gorgeous. Hey Cecilia—"

I turned and my smile dropped at the empty space. I clamped my mouth shut.

It's just as beautiful as you said it would be.

Just like you said.

I glanced beside me before turning away. She'd gone, leaving only an empty space beside me.

That day I discovered the true meaning of emptiness. The beating of a single heart and the weight of the words I'd never be able to tell her.

I grabbed my phone and took a picture.

Then I went inside and slammed the window shut.
