Chapter Twenty-Seven: Days in Color// Cecilia's Satellite
I took the long way back home after work. Ms.Jenkins only needed me for a couple hours after classes so I'd taken my backpack with me. Now, hooking my thumbs through the straps of my backpack, I sighed. I kicked a pebble out of my way and hit the button on the pole beside me, the faded "Push To Walk" writing barely visible against the metal pole.
Better push it another few times. Just to make sure it works.
While waiting for clearance to walk, I stared up at the signal light. This was the only street where it was sideways, and it looked strange.
I wondered what it felt like to see the world horizontally when everyone around you was vertical. But then, it's a stupid traffic light. Barely anyone even notices anyway.
"Cece!"
I stayed facing forward, scanning my eyes for the voice.
"Cecilia!"
I turned slowly and leaned against the pole when I saw Lyon making his way towards me.
"Cece?"
He shrugged. "Nickname."
"But I don't even like it."
"You don't get to choose your own nickname, Cece.""Oh stop that."
"Cece."I gave him a dirty look and turned around. "Crap. You made me miss the walk signal. Thanks," I sighed, pressing the button again.
"You know those things don't work right?"
I set my jaw. "What."
"I mean. They could. I guess. But it's faster just to walk across yourself when the cars stop."
"No thanks. I don't have a deathwish."He snorted. "The cars here don't even go very fast!"
"But—"
"When I count to three, just walk across. One."
"I'm not listening."
"Two."
I swatted his shoulder. "You can go by yourself and I'll meet you on the other side."
He winked at me and grabbed my hand. "Three."
"Wait!"He pulled us both forward and I yelped, seeing a car coming down the road. And he responded with a single word.
"Run."
I didn't need any more urging. My feet slapped against the pavement, bookbag moving side to side as I pulled him along behind me.
Sidewalk. Safe.
"You were so scared. Oh god, that's precious," he laughed.
"Go to Hell, Lyon."
He winked and pointed finger guns at me. "Meet chu there."
"Oh shut up." I rolled my eyes and kept walking.
After a few minutes, he spoke again.
"You know, there's a song with your name in it."
I raised an eyebrow, glancing at him and back ahead. "Never heard it."
"Well you should. It's called Cecilia and the Satellite. Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. It's a band."
I shook my head. "Nope. Never heard it."
"Wait, I'll find it for you." He got out his phone and started fiddling with it. "It's on Youtube, you know. Just search it up." He stopped walking and stared at the phone in his hand. "Here," he said, catching up to me.
I shifted my bag onto the other shoulder and took his cellphone, watching the video load for a bit. The music spilled out into the street around us and I tried to lower the volume. He waved his hand. "Naw, just leave it up. It's not like there's anyone here anyway."
I looked around. "Okay."A few minutes later, and he was singing along, off-key and enthusiastic. I smiled to myself, keeping my walking pace with the beat of the song.
"If I could fly, then I would know
What life looks like from up above and down below
I'd keep you safe, I'd keep you dry."
Lyon looked down and winked at me. I swatted his shoulder. The sun was setting over the tops of the trees, flooding the sidewalk and buildings in gold.
Don't be afraid, Cecilia, I'm the satellite
And you're the sky.
