Chapter Seventeen: Rooftop// Breathe
"I can't breathe right, you know. It doesn't feel like I can."
"Hmm?" I watched her face, waiting for her to explain. She spread her arms and stretched, taking in a slow breath in the silent night. It didn't last very long. Her breathing stopped suddenly and she gasped, bringing her arms back down to her sides.
"My breathing. It's shallow. Maybe it's not just my heart that was broken. Maybe it was my lungs too."
I felt a twist in my gut, and anger at the man who did this to her. "It'll get better in time."
She studied the roof tiles before answering. "You know what else has shallow breathing? Dying animals."
"You're not going to die of heartbreak."
She stayed silent.
I wondered why.
I guess there's nothing left to say when the one who owns your heart also stole the words out of your mouth.
Or perhaps she didn't want to say what we both knew. Yes, people do die of heartbreak.
They do, they do, they do.

A/N: Hmm, yes we know I'm a child when it comes to patience but I'd really like your advice at this point. While I know this book has a slow start, what do you think of it so far?
You can be brutally honest. Maybe I'm way too critical of myself...
Your bespeckled writer scribbling away,
