Chapter Fifty-Six: Present Day// Doubt
I pressed my lips together. "She promised to return. But I never saw her again. I guess... not every story has a happy ending, no matter how badly you want it."
The girl stayed silent. Then she turned to me under the glow of the lamps, the smudged mascara dried under her eyes.
"Oh."
"So what are you going to do now?"
I frowned slightly and kicked the concrete under my shoes. "Nothing. I'll keep on living. I lived fine before I knew her, I'll be okay without her."
She slumped. "I thought it would end better."
I laughed. "No. This is life. There's no neat endings. You can't keep waiting for people to return. You'll miss the road to bigger things in life."
"That doesn't change that it still hurts."
I smiled. "Of course not. Let it hurt. It hurt because you cared. But learn to appreciate everyone. Because no one will stay forever. Love them while they're here. While the universe lets them stay. You may not be able to stop anyone from leaving, but you'll treasure the time you had with them more."
She frowned. "I'd better go. It's getting late."
"Alone?" I raised an eyebrow. "I'll drop you."
"Okay."
"Hey. But don't lose hope."
She looked up at me and I smiled.
"In matters of love, I've never been fortunate enough to feel it. But there's people who have. Couple who stay together. People who don't leave each other. Just because it doesn't work out sometimes, and just because you've been torn apart, it doesn't mean you won't find it eventually." I glanced up at the sky. "This world is a cruel place sometimes. But Love is the only magic we have."
I smiled at her sadly. "Roald Dahl. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."
"Do you believe in magic?"
"Yes."
But sometimes I wonder if magic believes in me.
