Although it was rare for me to take an audience outside the palace walls, today called for a special occasion.  Soon, Helena would be departing for America.  We'd both done our best to avoid tears, but I understood the reality that my friend needed to return home and start her life.

"You'll still have Ella," Helena said, referring to one of the most inappropriate persons I was acquainted with.

"It's not entirely the same and you know it."

"You'll do fine on your own, your majesty."

"Will I?  How can you be sure?"

"I've seen you grow, watched what you've overcome.  You're ready for this."
