Chapter thirteen

Tris

I'm conscious during the operation. They gave me a serum to go under so they could work on me; I'm still awake, but not fully awake. I'm in two places at once, I know I'm under a serum and see the operating table I'm on, but I'm also in the simulation they've created to distract me while they operate.

It's the first pleasant simulation I've ever had, and I don't feel any of the pain I feel in real life. I am lying on a bed, with Tobias beside me; he is stroking my hair, and kissing between my eyebrows. He cradles my head, tilting it back with one hand and running his thumb over my cheek, he kisses me. This simulation brings comfort and good memories, but unfortunately I also am seeing real life. I see white light, I see needles, and wires, and machines. I see scientists hovering above me, I see with a silver gleam, the scalpel in their hands, and the hungry look in their eyes, I try to focus on the simulation, Tobias is wrapping me closer into his arms, and I nestle my head into his shoulder; trying to make his scent which reminds me of safety to envelope me. If I concentrate hard enough I might be able to make this real, to forget about the real world and its problems and just focus on the pleasure, but I can't. I need to know what they are doing to me, I must be able to wake up if I need to, to stop them from using the transmitters, I need to watch this. I inhale a deep breath and hold it in; they are coming towards me with their sharp tools. I exhale and cringe as I wait for them to cut me open, the first one comes towards me, and walks behind me. "Why is she behind me?" I think "I got shot in my torso." And that is when I realize, they don't just want to remove my transmitters........they want to exploit the secret to my divergent brain, I scream and the scalpel goes in
