I don't know what to say. He's never said anything like that before, I've never seen him looking this utterly vulnerable. For the first time since his fear landscape Tobias seems like a small, frightened child and I just want to scoop him up in my arms. He let his guard down and showed me his soft side.
"Tobias" My voice barley comes out as a whisper.
In response he puts his hand over mine on his chest and pulls me closer, completely surrounding me in his warmth.
"Shhhh Don't say anything. Tris I-"
The door whips open and there stands a panting Caleb. Automatically Tobias steps in front of me and puts an arm protectively acrossed my body.
"Caleb-" He says roughly "What do you want?"
"No time- Beatrice," He gasps "We discovered something important about your transmitters. Quickly- come with me!"
Tobias hesitates for a moment, before sweeping me off my feet- literally. Easing one leg under my knees, and with the other gently holding the back of my head up with his hand.
I begin to protest when his hot breath tickles my ear.
"Beatrice, this might be important. It'll be okay, I'm here, I've got you, and I'm not going to let anything bad happen to you- ever." He speaks soft while gently caressing my skin, in attempt to soothe me.
I murmur my agreement and bury my face in the crook of his neck. It seems we have been walking forever when finally I hear Caleb say 'In here.' I move my face from Tobias's skin, and blink as my eyes adjust.
I regret opening my eyes immediately. We are in a new laboratory, one filled with needles, wires, heart monitors, and all other things I despise- but that's not why I regret opening my eyes, no.
The reason I wish I hadn't opened my eyes is the man standing in front of me- The man who would have killed thousands in cold blood, the man who betrayed my mother; only to find that she betrayed me too, the man who held me at gunpoint and fired. David.
