Chapter 29: (Ashton's POV)

Chris and I walk in to the maze last. Why? Well, it's because the idiot got distracted by a freaking butterfly, so I had to literally drag him into the maze. The thick, deep green hedges block many routes toward the center, making us turn around at almost ever corner. As the minutes begin to tick by faster, I begin to feel lost. Where are we? I turn to Chris and just as he begins to speak we see two paris of feet leap over us. The jump startles me so much that I fall onto Chris. He catches me and helps me back to my feet. Still distracted by the jumpers I thank him. The people had to be Cassie and Dan. Only Cassie would do something stupid and dangerous like that. Especially if she was mad.... and by the sounds of it, someone has managed to piss her off. But I need to stay focused, so I ignore all my thoughts and put them aside for later. I can confront the girls later. Yea.. That'll work. Right?

Still trapped in the world of my fascinating thoughts, Chris pulls me along. He manages to find a lot of the correct paths. Before we know it, we begin to get closer to the middle. While we walk down another pathway, we hear, "Ahh!!! PJ! Get off of me!" A look of anger and shock washes over Chris and he clenches his fists. A lot of russling occurs and the girl, Sadie, says, "Watch where your going next time silly!" Chris rolls his eyes, now knowing it's Sadie and we continue down the path, with the sound of crazed laughter behind us. The hedges or bushes, well whatever you call them, begin to thin and the center of the maze is visible. The only downside is that we are the last ones in.... Instantly, Chris runs for the patch of roses and I follow him. I look around to see what the others are doing. Sadie is rolling around in the dirt and PJ is looking for their ball in the blue bells. Phil is picking yellow flowers, while his partner Liz contently hums to a song, still trying to find the ball. Then, there's Dan and Cassie. Dan is walking along the hedges and peering into them cautiously, but Cassie seems stuck. I squint my eyes and see that her foot is lodged in between branches.

I want to help... but I can't.. It's against the rules. I try to turn y thoughts away from Cassie, but I physically can't. Even though she has been a little snotty lately, it's just because she's playing the part. Plus she's still my best friend, so I can't help but worry. But how can I help? I could walk over there and discreetly help her! Nahh... she'll say something, being that she could knock someone out of the race by doing so... Ah ha! Got it. I chuck and chunk of dirt at Dan and it hits his back. He rapidly turns around, searching for the person who threw it. I sheepishly smile and tilt my head toward the trees. He glances in the direction and sees Cassie. "Cassie!! Oh my gosh!" He shouts. Dan races to her rescue, with me and Phil watching carefully. Mission accomplished!

Now that Cassie is good, I should focus on my own team. I turn toward the patch of bright red roses and begin searching for our ball. Chris digs in the dirt and I push aside the delicate flowers. We remain pretty focused until we hear someone yell, "Found it!!" with a sea of laughter after it. Everyone turns to the source if cheerfulness and as thought, it was Sadie. While rolling around she managed to find their ball. Like how do they do it!? They've managed to win all the games! Hopefully we still have a chance.... They have to make it out before winning... So it's possible.... Eh... in a way. As PJ and Sadie run off triumphantly with their ball, I return to the beautiful roses. Their thorn covered stems stab my hands and bring on small red patches on them. Ignoring the pain, I continue to search. The sun continues to soar across the sky as time ticks away. Even though it's only been but like 5 to 10 minutes, hopes of winning diminish by the second.

Finally, that sliver of hope is destroyed when Cassie yells, "C'mon Dan! I've found it!" She holds up a dark green ball, that is the small color of the hedges. A wide grin spreads across her face and she climbs on top of the hedges along with Dan. "Later losers!" She shouts, taking the leap over to the next hedge. After what feels like eternity, they are out of sight and it's just us and Hufflepuff. Now we can't let Hufflepuff beat us. Absolutely not. It's just not allowed. More minutes go by and all hope is gone, until Chris runs over to me and grabs my arm. He pulls me up and I run next to him. I don't what we're doing until I see the small red ball clutched in his hands. We race out of the center and head for the win. Just maybe that hope is back..
