SIXTY SIX

One week later, and Eren's wounds were progressively healing. Jean had apologized to him, and though Eren didn't return the apology or say sorry to any of his friends, he could tell the tension between them all had dwindled.

Mikasa had started walking with him to school again.

The best part was that Levi still accompanied Eren throughout the whole way. Whenever Eren texted Levi saying he was ready to go, Levi would appear at his window within mere minutes, as if he had been waiting.

At first, Mikasa had been extremely hesitant to allow Levi to walk with them. Eren could understand why. This tradition had been sacred, something shared strictly between him, Mikasa, and Armin. And after Armin died, things were never the same. With Levi's arrival, things were . . . Different. But was it in a good or bad way?

Eventually, Mikasa had warmed up to her cousin and now she no longer constantly shot glares at him. It made Eren happy — both of the Ackermans noted the subtle positive change in his personality, though he was still gloomy and could sometimes drift off. Levi would always steady him, though.

Meanwhile, Eren noticed something, too. He had a gut feeling, it was strange really, but he just suspected that Levi was . . . Planning something. Something big or small, Eren didn't know, but he felt like it was definitely not the latter.

During his free class, Eren slipped stealthily towards the storage closet. It was passing period, so he chose to do it then to avoid suspicion from any teachers. Entering the closet, he wasn't too surprised to see Levi already there.

Only, he was muttering something fiercely under his breath. When he was notified of Eren's presence, his head snapped up and he blinked, almost in a daze. He then cleared his throat, welcoming Eren with a curt hello.

Puzzled, Eren sat down beside him and returned the saying. "What are you up to?" He asked curiously. It was a harmless question, but he was genuinely interested. Levi nonchalantly swallowed, lying smoothly, "Studying."

"With no books?" Eren pointed out, and Levi leaned closer, poking his head with a smirk. "I'm reciting different things from history by memory, stupid. Then I'll check to see if I'm right later," he said, and Eren nodded slowly.

"Okay," he murmured, not wanting to delve further into the topic too much. Sighing, he slouched down, dropping himself below Levi's height so he could rest his head on the dark-haired boy's shoulder. Levi hummed at his action.

Slipping his hand into Eren's, Levi glanced down at his boyfriend, whose eyes had shut. He watched Eren for a moment, admiring the rhythmic way he breathed. Who could ever think to harm such a beauty? Levi wondered.

Apparently, Grisha did; and he was Eren's father. And that scum Dimo Reeves. Levi felt anger pool through him and he had to restrain himself from giving a twitch as the fury pulsated through his whole body. What nerve some people had.

Peaceful moments of silence passed, and minutes slowly ticked on. Levi was feeling quite content with Eren curled up at his side. And he was cherishing being the taller one for once. He wished he could change their heights . . .

No matter. Eren can be taller and still submit to me, Levi decided. He rested his head back against the wall and started to doze, snapping himself out of it occasionally to divert his gaze from the closet door to his slumbering boyfriend.
