ONE HUNDRED THIRTY FOUR
♜ ♜ ♜While Mikasa was talking to Levi, Erwin sat at his desk.
He tapped his pen on the assortment of files he had spread out across the surface, all about Eren Yeager and his alleged victims. He looked down at the smiling face of Eren and wondered how such a boy could become a monster.
A monster . . . In the back of Erwin's conscience he remembered feeling the same way as Eren, when he was the same age and under almost the same circumstances, with the world stacked against him, calling him a monster.
But that was then. Not now.
Taking a deep breath, Erwin began to think. He knew Eren. From when they had served together all those lifetimes ago. He had assessed the boy's behavior and antics, he had to because he was his mentor, but most importantly it was that if Eren were to lose control, Erwin would be able to stop him if others couldn't.
He knew how the boy was. He was . . . Violent. A bit of a psychopath. No, he probably was a psychopath. But he still had good in him. His intentions were pure, at least for a while, and it was simply to protect his people.
The only reason Eren had even turned so bitter and sour was because his mother was killed by Titans. His mother . . . Erwin looked at the file.
That's it!
Something had to have happened to Carla, and it certainly was not by Eren's hand. He would not ever harm his mother, she was the person Eren cherished the most. So that could only mean that the only other person there had.
Dina Fritz . . . Erwin clenched his jaw and picked up Dina's file, squinting at her face. Her pale complexion, fair blonde hair, pale blue eyes — she was pretty and innocent-looking. But Erwin knew that looks could be deceiving.
He had to dig into her past. And he had a hunch on where to start.
Turning on his computer and entering the password, he went onto Google and typed in the old hospital Grisha used to work at. The page instantly popped up and he clicked on it, typing into the search engine 'Dina Fritz.'
As expected, a memorial flashed onto his screen of her, along with a decent-sized paragraph of information regarding her. He desperately scanned through the words, skipping over trivial things like compliments to Dina.
There. His lips pursed into a thin line as he read.
"Dina was Dr. Yeager's former assistant nurse. The two were very close. When Grisha was fired, Dina was quite upset and we all felt extremely bad for her, yet it had to be done. And when the news of Grisha's suicide broke out, she was devastated. She looked so broken. I feel so horrible. I hope she's with Grisha now."
It did not take a genius to piece two-and-two together. Many would look at this and assume Grisha and Dina to be just friends, but Erwin's mind was flying at a mile per minute. Grisha, a famous and respected doctor, was fired for a reason. What kind of reason would it be? If he messed up on a patient there would be a lawsuit. Which could only mean a few other options, and Erwin had a hunch.
An affair.
Grisha was let go because of an affair, and who else than with his colleague? And of course, he was already married, which meant that if the news broke free then not only would Grisha be under fire, but the hospital would be, as well. Negative attention on their top workers was not something the hospital wanted.
Then Grisha committed suicide, and Dina grew angry and confronted Carla. Something must have happened, Dina must have attacked Carla out of her spite, and Eren must have seen. That would definitely make him rage.
And Erwin knew from experience that a berserk Eren was dangerous.
Which meant that Eren most likely did kill Dina, but he would never harm his mother. And while Eren was still going to have to be charged with the murder of Dina, if Erwin worked hard enough he could convince people that he was in fact innocent in the matter of Carla's death. Eren Yeager would never hurt her.
But it was going to be harder because of Eren's disappearance.
Running a hand down his face, Erwin sighed. What had Eren done? He should have gone straight to him. Erwin would have helped him. He might have even been able to let Eren off on account of self-defense, yet now . . . He huffed.
Erwin was torn between doing his job and assisting a friend. He could slacken his efforts of finding Eren, let the case sizzle and fade out into a cold case. But he knew the public would not rest with a murderer on the loose.
I'm sorry, Eren. Eren's future in this life had looked so bright, too.
All Erwin could hope for now was that wherever Eren was, he was safe and somewhere people would not find him. Erwin knew how Eren hated being caged, and being holed up somewhere was probably killing him.
However it was for the best.
Wherever Eren was, it appeared to be a sanctuary. Erwin could only pray that he stayed there and kept himself out of the line-of-fire.
Since if Erwin were to find him, he'd have no choice but to arrest him.
Remain in hiding, Eren, Erwin thought. Please stay safe.
Closing out of the tabs, Erwin shut down his computer. He then organized his files, with Eren's right on top. His brow creased and he chewed on his lower lip, exhaling heavily. Eren looked so joyful in that picture, so cheerful.
His cheeks were flushed crimson with adrenaline, his lips spread into a gracious smile, his brilliant green eyes stretched wide with happiness. It hurt Erwin that his youthful enthusiasm was now gone, his innocence yet again ripped away from him far too soon, as if history had a nasty way of repeating itself.
Erwin hoped that wherever Eren was now he was still somewhat happy.
