The dance committee was not at all what I expected it to be. I walked into the gym (the only meeting place they could find since the school was cheap). The preppy girl, Kristie, was right behind me. Instead of the two or three preppy girls that I was looking for, there were about eight members. Guys and girls from grade eight were all jamming out to the radio on the stage. Some were lounging about and the ones who were actually working were measuring the gym.

"What on earth?" I accidentally asked aloud.

"I feel the same." Kristie said. "Alright guys! Turn the radio off and gather around." Nobody moved.

"Can I try?" Kristie nodded. "I'm signing free autographs." Everyone gathered quicker than Justin Bieber fans at a swimming competition.

"Thanks for listening." Kristie said sarcastically. "But Ava's not signing autographs..." I breathed a sigh of relief. My signature was so not fame-ready. "...until we're done planning." I cursed myself. "Now, let's sit down and brainstorm."

"Do you guys have a theme yet?" I figured that I should get the conversation started.

"Nope. That's why you're here." Everyone directed their gaze to me.

"Alright." The pressure was intense, especially since I had no idea how to plan a dance. I was going by what the movies told me. "I guess we could shoot out some random theme ideas then and maybe something will spark an idea." A ton of answers were thrown my way all at once.

"Guys one at a time." Kristie delegated. "And we'll write them on the whiteboard." I walked over to the board.

"Okay, raise your hand and tell me your name and your idea."

"Why our name?"

"So I can get to know you all." I knew most of them, but some I was sketchy about their names.

"Oh, okay." The girl at front said. She raised her hand quickly so I let her talk. "My name's Felicity Moray and I was thinking we could do a frozen theme." The few guys that were there chorused their complaints.

"Okay, I'll write that down." The guys all booed. "Well, if you don't like it, why don't you come up with some things that you like?" I had no idea where my sudden boost of confidence had come from but I needed to learn to summon it for presentations. Another few hands shot up.

"I'm Donna McKinley. What about the snow-coming dance?" Donna shrugged. She seemed nice enough, but I knew looks could be deceiving.

"My name is Elise Scott, although you probably already know me." She said with an air of high class. I knew I didn't like her from the moment I saw her in sixth grade. "I was thinking we go safe and do a winter wonderland." I wrote it down although I made a mental note not to ever think of doing it.

"I go by Mitchel Grant although most know me as Mitch. Since the dance is close to February, I was thinking we base it off Valentine's day. But don't call it 'valentine's dance' or something boring like that. I was hoping the 'candy hearts dance' of the 'Queen of hearts dance.'"

"Those are some good ideas." I wrote both down and stood back to look at it. When the rest of the committee left, I was still staring at the board hoping that something would catch my eye.

"Not promising is it?" Kristie asked with a frown.

"No but...I can come up with an idea."

"Just have it by Saturday because the dance is in two weeks and we have lots of planning to do.

"I'll have an idea." I just hoped I wasn't lying to her.

"I'm freaking out right now Alice! Please help!" I was pacing back and forth in her bedroom after school. The winter dance haunted me throughout the day and I still couldn't think of anything to do.
