Chapter 11

                       Summer's POV

Out of the corner of my eye I see Tomika stop breathing, then start to cough. I turn my head, and look her straight in the eyes. She nods once, and I inhale deeply, preparing for the worst. Putting on a smile I look up at Freddy.

         "Sure!" I squeak, trying to sound as normal as possible. I follow Freddy out of the room, the hairs on my neck standing on end. Once the door closes, I release a breath I didn't know I was holding. "Did you feel that?" I ask Freddy, rubbing my arms, trying to not look nervous.

           "Uh, yeah." He says, scratching his neck.

           "It felt like everyone in the room was staring at us." I tell him. He nods then coughs, clearing his throat.

            "Summer, do you have, you know. Any feeling for me, at all?" Freddy asks, looking me straight in the eyes.

            "I mean, yeah, but. I can't really. Sorry!" I splutter, my hand twirling a piece of hair.

             "Then Summer Hathaway, will you go on a date with me?" I blink hard, and start to say yes then stop myself. No, you can't just betray Tomika like that. I scold myself.

             "I'm sorry Freddy, but I can't."I spit out, clenching my hands into fists. He looks at me confused, his eyes, tearing up a little.

             "Do you know how much courage that took?" Freddy asks me, waving his hand in the air. I nod timidly. "You just crushed me Summer, crushed me." I gulp, and look away from him. I can't stand to hurt him any longer.

"Look Freddy, I really, really like you. But I made a promise to someone first, and that person matters to me. I'm so sorry." I blurt out, turning to leave right after I finished.

      Entering the classroom, I could hear everyone talking. And I knew it was about Freddy and I. I glance and Tomika and give her a small smile, she returns it.

     Mustering all my will left to live I say, "It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life." I slip into my desk, and clasp my hands together. I feel awful, down right mean.

        "Thanks Summer, that meant a lot to me." Tomika tells me, and I nod, absentmindedly. "If it will make you feel any better, we can go for ice cream after school!"

         "Thanks Tomika. But I think I'll pass." I tell her, butting my lip, trying to not cry. But my breath quickens.

"No you're going to come have ice cream with me." Tomika says to me, and I know I don't have an option. Then the classroom door opens a bit. Freddy, my mind screams, and I instantly look up. Our eyes meet, and I can literally feel the disappointment. Smacking my head down on my desk I start to cry.

"Hey guys!" Freddy says weakly.

"Hey Freddy!" Tomika's cheerful voice pipes up. I don't know what I've done, I didn't have to promise to keep off Freddy. He likes me and I like him, but we can't have each other. Could this get any worse?
