‘Sure!’ I said.
‘Cody, are you coming?’ Alli shouted up the stairs.
‘Sure, just give me a sec. Get the boards.’ He replied.
‘Boards?’ I said stupidly.
‘Oh, surf boards! Guess it’s an Aussie thing, haha!’ Alli said.
‘Oh, aha! Sorry, me and my British ways I guess.’ I smiled.
‘Have you ever surfed before?’ She said.
‘Um… no.’ I said.
‘Oh, no problem, Cody’s an expert, he’ll teach you!’ She laughed, putting her hair into a ponytail. Every style she had it in looked perfect.
I laughed before Alli took me to the garage. She flicked the light on and measured me up for a board.
‘I’ll give you my old one, it’s a good one to learn on!’ She said, searching through the rack of boards.
‘Okay, thanks!’ I laughed as Alli handed me the surf board.
‘Hold it like this!’ She laughed as I struggled to handle the board.
‘Thanks, haha, I’m clueless!’ I laughed awkwardly.
‘Don’t worry, I was the same when my dad taught me! You get used to it!’ She said, grabbing hers and what I assumed was Cody’s board… seeing as it said Cody on it.
As we walked back up the drive, Cody came out of the house and closed the door.
‘Thanks!’ He said, taking his board off of Alli.
‘Come this way Hannah!’ Cody said, grabbing my hand and pulling me to the side gate.
‘Close your eyes! Cody and I will guide you!’ Alli said.
I closed my eyes and got dragged down a path, well at least I think.
*Some time later*
‘Okay, you can open your eyes now!’ Alli said.
I opened them and found myself staring at a small stretch of golden sand that only had a few people on it. Bordering the sand was a crystal blue ocean. It was absolutely beautiful.
‘Wo… wow!’ I stuttered.
‘Pretty isn’t it?’ Cody said, staring out at the sea.
‘It’s… gorgeous!’ I said, a little lost for words.
‘It’s my favourite place ever; it’s so calm and peaceful! We come and totally unwind here, it’s a getaway.’ Alli smiled.
We walked towards the water and found a place in the sand to lay down our things. We sat down whilst we continued to stare at the ocean.
‘So, you’ve never surfed aye?’ Cody laughed, pulling me off my feet.
‘Total learner here!’ I said.
‘It’s not too bad; this is a good place to learn.’ He said, walking towards the water.
After having a demonstration from Alli and multiple falls/slips/catastrophes from myself, I think I slowly started to pick it up. I caught at least two waves, I think.
We sat back in the sand and dried off.
‘That was amazing, this is amazing! Thank you!’ I said.
‘You were a natural!’ Alli said, but I’m pretty sure she was just saying that to cover up how bad I actually was. I laughed and laid back on the towel.
Cody’s phone went off and he stood up to answer it.
‘Oh, it’s Matt! I better go, see you guys later.’ Cody said, grabbing his board and walking off.
‘Bye.’ Alli and I said.
‘So, do you like it here in LA?’ Alli smiled.
‘It’s different from England, but I love it!’ I said.
‘Good, I miss the Gold Coast sometimes, but when I come here, it feels like a little sense of home.’ She said.
‘Yeah, I miss my friends and everybody but I guess the greatest friendships survive distance I guess.’ I said.
‘Totally agree!’ She said.
My phone bleeped and it was a message from Caleb.
‘Morning (I think, it is here!) I miss you lots, hope you’re alright <3 Can you FaceTime? Xox’ The message read.
‘Oh, my boyfriend wants to FaceTime, I better go home!’ I laughed.
‘Are you sure? Just use our wifi if you want?’ Alli smiled.
‘Oh, thank you! Haha, so you’ll get to meet Caleb!’ I said, putting meet in inverted commas.
‘Guess so! Here, pass me your phone, I’ll put the password in, you should reach it from here.’ She laughed as I threw my phone at her.
*Awkward waiting for the other person to answer FaceTime ring*
‘Hey babe!’ Said a very tired looking Caleb.
‘Hi Caleb! I miss you loads!’ I said, smiling like a loser.
‘What time is it there? It’s 4am here.’ He said. That explained it all.
‘Um, it’s nearly 8pm here! You shouldn’t have got up so early!’ I said, feeling guilty. I saw Alli smile.
‘I wanted too!’
‘Oh, this is my friend Alli!’ I said, turning my phone to allow Alli into focus.
‘Hey, looking after my girl?’ He laughed, rubbing his eyes.
‘I am!’ She laughed.
We spoke for around half an hour, before I forced him to go back to sleep.
‘Thank you!’ I said to Alli.
‘He’s sweet, looks like you’ve got a good thing there.’ She said.
‘We sure do.’ I said.
Not knowing what was about to happen.
