Connor was currently sitting in the back of the Murphy's car, staring out the window as they drove. How did he get there, you ask? Well, Cynthia had forced Connor to go see some show his sister was in, threatening to cut his hair if he didn't comply. The car was silent, and that's just the way he liked it.
"What's this stupid show called again?" Connor asked, clearly annoyed in his current situation. Cynthia sighed. "It's called Oklahoma, and it's a classic." He rolled his eyes. "So you're saying it's old?" Larry butted in, "Its been around longer than you have, Connor, and I-" "I don't remember asking you." He snapped.
Larry groaned, but he stopped talking. When the three of them finally got to the venue, (Zoe had to be there two hours earlier to get ready and all that crap.) they paid for the tickets, got the show pamphlets, and sat down. Connor considered himself lucky that he didn't have to sit with his parents, since Connor and Jared were also there.
He walked down one of the isles, trying to find his friends, when he saw the familiar blue stripped shirt. He took the empty seat next to Evan, as they waited for the show to start. The set was designed to look like a farm, with a windmill and a blue sky behind it. There was a small yellow house with a rocking chair in front of it.
After a few short words from the director, the room went dark, and the show finally began. Zoe pulled off her character, Laurey, pretty well as far as Connor was concerned. As Act One went on, Connor noticed that he was taking a liking to Will Parker, although his dancing reminded him of Woody from Toy Story.
The show wasn't as bad as Zoe led him to believe, and he wasn't sure if he should be relieved or dissapointed. He took a breif look at his pamplet, seeing what was next."Cain't Say No- Ado Annie," The pamphlet read. He heard Aunt Eller, who was an older woman in the show, mention a, "Peddler," who Zoe had told him was a salesman of some sort.
"And he's got Ado Annie with him, Will Parker's Ado Annie." The girl who must be Ado Annie walked onstage, arm in arm with the Peddler. She had a smile on her face as she said, "Oh don't you worry about Will. He ain't due back for a while now, at least I think so!" Aunt Eller gave Laurey a look that nearly made Connor burst into laugher.
The girl was on the short side, but then again, everyone seemed short, considering Connor was six foot. The scene went on, and the Peddler put down his suitcase to get something out of it. He pulled out a pair of hot pink bloomers, offering them to Aunt Eller. Ado Annie looked shocked, Laurey just stood there awkwardly, and Aunt Eller looked like she needed an Advil.
The audience laughed, and Ado Annie mouthed something, brushing off what just happened. When she and Laurey talked, and she found out that Will Parker was, in fact, back from Kansas City, (hence the music number.) she walked a few steps away, laughing nervously. "Same." Evan whispered.
A few lines later, Laurey asked her, "You can't go around kissin' every man that asks ya! Didn't anybody ever tell you that?" Ado Annie turned to the audience, completely deadpan, and replied, "Ya, they told me." The audience laughed, and Connor was sent into a breif period of hysterical laughter, because Ado Annie didn't give a single shit.
Music started, and he instantly became curious, as to how this girl sang. The song started off kind of slow, but this girl was good. As the song went on, about halfway through, Connor noticed that the music was getting softer. Soon enough, the music went out completely. His heart seemed like it stopped, but he wasn't sure why.
But somehow, she kept going, although he did see her catch a small and quick glare at the soundboard. Her voice almost seemed more confident that the music went out. He was shocked at how much sound could come out of such a petite person. The show went on, and soon enough, act one was over, and it was time for intermission.
Connor followed Evan and Jared when they went to go get flowers, and he figured he would get his sister some, and maybe Ado Annie too, if he could figure out what her name was. When he finally got back to his seat, his heart fluttering beyond belief for some reason, and he could not wait to see what Act two had in store.
"And I get Ado Annie." Will had a lovestruck grin on his face, and she ran towards him, nearly knocking him over when she hugged him. She had to go up on her toes, and the whole audience was sent into, "Awws," at the action. Eventually, the stage was empty, until Ado Annie walked out with the Peddler.
"Are you fucking kidding me." Jared muttered. Soon the, "Persian Goodbye," came along, and he could have sworn he saw Evan turn green. When she was in a dip, Will Parker stared down at her, and Connor had to choke back a laugh. When the Peddler wanted to say goodbye to Will, he turned around quickly saying, "No you're not, I just saw the last one."
Soon enough, the Peddler left, and the next song started. Connor decided halfway through the song that Will was a massive hypocrite. He was telling her to be faithful, but two seconds later, he was dancing with two other women! He vaugely remembers Zoe talking to him about the scene, saying that Ado Annie was a, "Sarcastic little shit."
For once, he would admit that Zoe was right. She put her hands on her hips, and said, "Oh suure." And started bobbing her head side to side, mocking Will in a nasily voice, "You have to be faithful." The audience was sent into hysterics, and Connor swore he was going to cry, he was laughing so hard.
She stormed over, the two women ran off, and when Will faced his back to her, she snapped her fingers in his ear, and said, "Will sweetheart, I'm down here." Yep, Connor was crying. When curtain call came, she ran out from behind the house, wearing a grin from ear to ear. She bowed, and many people in the audience stood, including Connor.
Then there was the mad rush out of the venue. Connor stood up, and looked around, tying to find Zoe. He walked in the direction of the flowers, when he heard people start screaming. He ran towards them, terrified that his sister might have gotten hurt. He stopped when people parted ways, and there was a girl, with a flower boquet bigger than her head.
She seemed to struggle, trying to carry them all, but she was laughing and smiling nonetheless. He was about to take a step towards her, when Evan poked his arm. "Mind if- if we g-get out of here? Its k-kinda c-crowded." Connor nodded in agreement, and he turned to where the girl was standing, noticing that she was looking back at him.
He felt a blush creep up to his face, and made a mental note to ask Zoe what the hell her name was.
