"Wait what."  This couldn't be happening, he thought to himself, shaking his head. It was the opening night of the school play, Romeo and Juliet, and Romeo just happened to get himself sick with pneumonia. The best part? He's not going to be able to perform tonight, or any  night, for that matter.

"What do you mean he's going to be out until next week?" The director, an older man by the name of Mr.Tyler, shook his head. "I mean that the pneumonia is going to take him out of school for at least a week. That's just the minimum."

Connor sighed in annoyance, feeling a headache coming on. "Well what are we going to do, put Klienman onstage?"A curt laugh escaped his throat. "Juliet would throw a fit, and then we'd have to find two new leads."

Yep, a headache was definitely coming on.

"I actually have someone in mind." This caused Connor to look up from his bag, in which he was currently looking for Advil to take away the pounding in his head. "Who?" Mr.Tyler didn't say a word as he raised his eyebrows, answering Connor's question.

Oh no.

"You're joking." A nervous laugh came out, his heart quickly beginning to pound. "I'm dead serious." Connor shook his head, this time in disbelief. "I know this is last minute but-" "Last minute!?" Connor yelled, cutting off his director. "The show starts in two hours, and you want me to play-" "Let me finish." He stopped mid-rant.

Mr.Tyler sighed, probably annoyed that he had been cut off. "If you had let me finish-" He started."I would have told you that you're the only guy here that would fit in the costume." Once the panic died down, it started to make sense to Connor.  Romeo was six foot, and pretty narrow. Poor kid was a nerd, and Connor would know, since the guy was in a few of his classes.

"Are you sure there's nobody else that'll fit in the costume?" Connor was trying to negotiate his way out of this.  "Anyone else that I'd consider for the role is either too wide or too short for the costume." Connor cursed under his breath. He knew he wouldn't be getting out of this one, so with an exasperated sigh, he reluctantly agreed.

"You're a lifesaver, Murphy." The costume was quickly shoved into Connor's hands, and he was told to find Evan Hansen if he needed help with the costume. He ran into the dressing room, and after explaining what felt like one hundred times to people that he was the replacement, he finally was able to find time to get into his costume.

Unfortunately, he had to ask Hansen to help him zip the costume the other half of the way.

This is how Connor ended up wandering the hallway trying to find Evan Hansen, who apparently was known as the, "Costume Guy." That's what people called him anyway, since he was usually the one helping people with costumes. By the time he found Evan, he was beginning to think that this was a bad idea.

I mean, what would Connor Murphy possibly know about acting?

Of all things.

"Hey, um, Evan?" The costume guy turned around, probably surprised that someone had addressed him by his first name. "Ya, um, hi, I'm Evan. You're the replacement for Romeo, right?" Connor nodded, not sure if the knot in his throat was from his nerves or the very gay feeling he was getting.

"Anyway, what do you need help with?" He had almost completely forgotten that his costume was only half zipped up his back. "Oh ya, can you zip up the back for me?" It might have been his imagination, but he could have sworn that Evan's face was turning red. To avoid humiliation, he decided that it was his imagination.

"Ya, s-sure."  Connor was sure that this was all going to his head, but he felt very self conscious. Not only of the idea that he was most likely going to royally screw this up, but also how he could sense how close Evan was. It didn't help that he happened to be easy on the eye, but he's not admitting that anytime soon.

"There you go." With a few final touches, Connor was ready for makeup. "Well look at this, my dumbass of a brother has finally managed to look dumber." "Ha ha ha-" he started, his voice flat. "Very funny, Zoe." Evan decided to join the conversation by letting Zoe know that my makeup needed to be done.

"I'll be right on it Ev, thanks!" Evan smiled. "No problem, Zoe." He turned to Connor next. "Break a leg, Connor. I'll be backstage if you have an issue with the costume." Connor nodded, giving Evan a quick, "Thank you," before watching him walk out the door. "Come on Connor, I need to get your makeup done and you still have to get a mic."

Reluctantly, he sat down on the stool. "If you make me look like an idiot, I swear to God-" Zoe reached for a makeup brush, "Keep running your mouth and not only are you going to look like an idiot onstage, but I'll tell Evan about your little crush on him." Connor scoffed. "I do not have a crush on Hansen."

"Mhm... Now hold still so that I don't poke your eye out."

...

 "I know what you're thinking."

Evan nearly jumped out of his skin, not realizing that Zoe was right behind him. Trying to catch his breath, he replied, " Zoe, what-what are you doing here?" She had a smug grin on her face, which automatically made Evan nervous. "I'm here to support my brother, and stop trying to change the subject."

There was now an accusing finger being pointed at him. "What are you talking about?" Zoe rolled her eyes, crossing her arms.  "Your obvious crush on my brother." Evan felt his face burning up. "Okay, so what if I do have a... minor... crush on Connor. What difference does it make?"

Zoe smiled. "What?" She didn't respond. "What!" Her grin got wider. "I'm just saying this now, but you might want to ask him to 99 on Saturday night." Evan smiled, despite the fact that he was a little confused. "Why?" Before Zoe turned to walk away, she said, "No reason."

When she was nearing the door frame, she turned back around. "Don't forget to order a milkshake."
