I am not in the habit of pleasing people
I am not your best friend
I'm the enemy that looks out for you
Because against my better judgement
I alone know what to do
I tell you what you need to hear
My harsh words push you farther
Until you've finally reached the clear
Coddling and smiles won't help you
Neither should I
But I can't ignore the fear in your eyes
I seem to be in the habit of saving people
People who hate me in the end
As I said before
I am not your friend
I don't need your thanks
And I don't need your pity
What's done is done
Let's not spoil this enmity
At least you know what to expect of me
I'm no different from gravity
Whenever I see you soaring
I will drag you down
Before they clip your wings
Before they see you frown
You don't understand me
But I understand them
I don't need you to agree with me
That's not my problem
I'm a force to be reckoned with
And you think me paranoid
It puts a smile on my face
Messing with you fills my void
When pretty hills beckon to you
I will chase you up steep cold mountains
And when I make you cross a river
Don't run for a fountain
It's not about being wicked
It's not about wiping the smile off your face
And I don't really want you to win
I want you to endure the race
You might not get it
Hell! You may never figure it out
I stand to gain nothing from this
You're just learning what life's all about
I may not say much
It's not important for me to
I say enough for many
To know what they're supposed to do
I don't make any excuses
So I don't have many regrets
No one can speak for me
I do what I do in humbleness
So hate me if you like
Separation isn't a curse
I understand what you think of me
But honestly things could be worse
Life doesn't give people recognition
Whether they live or die
Whether they accomplish something or not
Why should you and why should I?
Be you and I will be me
I'll be the villain and you the hero
Going through my obstacle course
Makes you the star of the show.
