They were eighteen years old in June of 1978, hardly adults, but their marriage had been arranged long ago.
He begrudgingly honored this arrangement all his life. He was to marry Blaire Evelyn Einrich, the most noble pureblood family out there besides his own.
The wedding was held in Einrich estate's ballroom, which had been decorated and prepared by the Einrich family house elves as well as Kreacher and Dobby.
Now, Regulus Black watched as Blaire and Gustav walked arm-in-arm down the aisle to where he stood. This was his wedding day, the day he had been preparing for all his life.
He turned to his parents who cheered him on as she was walked up to him. Sirius rolled his eyes and gave his brother a sarcastic thumbs up.
Regulus slipped the ring onto Blaire's finger. They stared at each other with nervous grins as he lifted the gossamer veil from her round face. He had always found beauty in her dark lashes and blue eyes that could pull anyone in.
Their vows were awkward, almost as if written by two who wished to be lifelong acquaintances. Silvia nudged her brother, severely uncomfortable as they had to listen. He nodded and rolled his eyes in response.
When Regulus kissed Blaire, the tension in the room had increased. Despite the obvious fact, all of the guests cheered in excitement.
He had his hands on her waist. She had her arms around his neck. Later on, people would tell them that it was the most passionate kiss they had ever seen in their lives. Both Blaire and Regulus knew that there was no passion between them. Their love for each other was simply platonic.
Sirius danced with Marlene. Every moment shared between them showed ten times the romance than a moment Regulus shared with Blaire.
A depressing envy filled Silvia as the two danced. Arlin was gone, and she still at times struggled to accept it. She danced awkwardly with Remus. They held their arms out as far away from each other as possible. Suddenly, partners were switched and she found herself in Regulus's arms.
He was a wonderful dancer, perhaps the best dance partner she ever had the pleasure of moving with. His dark eyes shimmered in the light of the ballroom as he stared into her own. Their faces were inches apart. Silvia smiled awkwardly and he smiled back. This smile was sincere. It looked like how love feels.
Suddenly, Silvia felt a quick flutter in her chest. She smiled wider and shamelessly moved closer to Regulus. A few guests noticed her movement and stared at her in shock. They knew something that Silvia had been repressing for a very long time.
This is ridiculous, she thought to herself as the flutters continued to grow. You can't do this to me now. He's married, not to mention, to my own cousin. You can't feel like this, Silvia, you can't. Ugly guilt suddenly replaced the flutters. The love of your life is gone. You can't let Regulus replace him. But, he's so beautiful.
Their foreheads touched. Her lips moved closer to his. Before they could touch, he moved back. Arms wrapped around her stomach and they were pulled apart. She quickly recognized her father's arms and sighed reluctantly as they dragged her away.
"The next step," Walburga Black explained, "is to consummate your marriage.
Regulus and Blaire sat on Blaire's bed, surrounded by Walburga, Orion, Lita, and Gustav.
"Of course." Regulus had reluctantly saved himself for her. He knew that she hadn't done the same, but he didn't mind.
Their parents left the room. The newlyweds looked at each other uncomfortably.
"You ready?" Blaire asked in a failed attempt to be seductive.
He sighed. "I'm ready when you are."
"We can pretend," she suggested. "We'll make some fake moaning sounds. I'll leave a couple of drops of blood on my bed. They won't even realize."
"They want us to have a baby," Regulus told her. "That's why this is so important to them.
Blaire sighed. "This is awful, Reg."
"It really is."
"Don't get me wrong," she said, waving a finger. "It's not because it's you. It's because they're forcing us to do this."
Regulus smiled. "I absolutely agree."
"Uh, yeah, like, buy me a drink first!" she laughed.
He shrugged, smirking. "I can. They have some down in the ballroom."
"I could use some alcohol right about now."
Standing up, he smiled. "I'll get you some. I will do whatever I can to make you happy."
"No, you don't have to." Blaire grabbed his hand. "I suppose we can try it just once."
Regulus glanced at the mannequin that her dress was worn on prior to the wedding. He sighed heavily. "I'll help you get your dress off."
They stood up together and she turned around so he could unzip the back.
"You know," she admitted, looking at him from over her shoulder. "I'm glad that of all the people I could have been forced to marry, they chose you.
He held her hand as she stepped out of her dress. "I am too."
Silvia and Remus sat alone at a dimly lit table in the ballroom.
"Why did you think that was a good idea?"
Silvia took another shot of firewhisky. "I'm an idiot."
"Silvia, listen to me," Remus reached over to touch her arm. "You are not an idiot. Believe me. Regulus and Blaire were forced to marry. You can do whatever you want with him, but not here. Not in front of all of these staunch purebloods."
"I just..." she paused to think. "Regulus and I have been friends forever. I just can't help but have our memories as children connect with my memories with Arlin as children."
Remus was quiet.
"I miss him so much," she said. "If Bellatrix Lestrange so much as considers showing up here, I'll kill her the first chance I get."
"Silvia." Remus tightened his grip on her arm. "You can't do that and you know it."
"I will."
"Would Arlin have liked it to see you turn into a murderer? Would I?"
She sighed. "It just hurts. It hurts so much to remember how as soon as he hit the ground she laughed. What kind of sick monster laughs at the misfortunes of another human being?"
Remus sighed. "That woman's far from human."
"She's a monster." Silvia turned to her brother. "A real monster. A monster that can never be tamed. Remus, don't ever tell me that you're a monster simply because you're not. You'll be a monster the second you laugh at the death of a human." She grabbed his hand. "You are so far from a monster."
He shifted uncomfortably. "How's Sienna?" he asked in an attempt to change the subject.
"She's coping well. Transformations are always safe and under control" Silvia admitted, pulling a cigarette out of her handbag.
"What? You smoke?" Remus sputtered.
She lit it and quickly took a drag. "It's 1978, Remus. Everybody smokes."
"But why you?" He asked, outraged.
Silvia shrugged. "It helps me forget all the bad times, I guess."
He pulled his hand away from her arm. "You're a bad influence. Put that thing out."
She crushed it in a nearby ashtray and watched as he stormed away.
