What I feel, I can't say
But my love is there for you, any time of day
But if it's not love that you need
Then I'll try my best to make everything succeedTell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, by my side? -George Harrison, What is Life.
Today was the day that the universe had waited for. Today would be the day that James married Lily. Today, a foundation would be set for a prophecy, a lifelong sorrow, and a legend.
James beamed at the altar, as if he had been born again. His three best friends stood by his side as his groomsmen. The bridesmaids, Dorcas, Alice, and Marlene, stood together on the other side. They waited patiently for the bride, giddy with excitement.
"Is it hot in here?" Silvia whispered, fanning herself with the program.
Her father, who sat to her left, nodded stoically, as to not disrupt the wedding that was about to commence.
"It is hot," Sienna whispered from the right. She put her head on Silvia's shoulder.
"Holy train," Silvia said as Lily began walking down the aisle with Mr. Evans at her side
Sienna raised her head. "That is quite a long train on a dress."
"It's beautiful," Silvia said. Their eyes followed her down the aisle. She stopped where James stood. They spoke their vows, love engulfing them more and more with each word. Then, just like that, they were wed. It felt like magic to see two people love each other so unconditionally. "I can tell that their love is never going to end," she told Sienna when it was all over.
"I wish I could find something like that," Sienna said quietly.
Silvia watched silently as Sienna flicked her long lashes at where James and Lily stood together. "What about Remus?" she whispered.
Sienna quickly shook her head. "Not after what happened."
"The guilt..."
"The guilt would destroy him," she said painfully.
Lyall stood and stretched his long legs. "Let's head on over to the reception, girls. I hear they have pumpkin patsies."
The reception room was beautifully decorated with lilies and fairy lights. It was surprisingly muggle, due to half of the guests being on Lily's side of the family. Silvia spotted Lily talking with two disgruntled guests. She and Sienna walked over to congratulate the newlyweds.
"Thank you for coming!" Lily giggled excitedly before hugging both girls. Then, she motioned to the frail woman clinging to a portly man. "Silvia, Sienna, meet my sister, Petunia, and her husband, Vernon Dursley."
"Ah, yes," Petunia said uncomfortably, licking her lips. "More freaky little friends from school, I presume?"
"Petunia," Lily hissed. "Today is my wedding day. Please, don't act like this today, of all days."
Sienna dragged Silvia away, obviously uncomfortable. Suddenly, she bumped into someone.
"Woah," the voice said. "Don't make me spill my firewhiskey."
"Oh," Sienna said, spinning around. "Sirius, I'm so sorry."
"No worries," he said, holding up his shot glass. Marlene McKinnon clung to his arm.
"Hello, Mar," Sienna said. "You look so beautiful."
"Thanks, love." Marlene smiled. "You too, as always." She moved her head to see Silvia. "Hey, Silvia, what'd you think of the wedding?"
Silvia smiled and waved to Marlene. "It was lovely."
"Sirius and I are planning something just like this."
Silvia raised her eyebrows. "Oh, wow!"
"You two are getting married?" Sienna asked, gnawing on an appetizer.
Marlene held up her left hand, showing off a diamond engagement ring. "Next year," she said. "We're aiming for May."
Sirius smiled half heartedly. His mind was somewhere else.
The last time Silvia had seen him, she thought he would never be the same.
Regulus's body had never been found, but everyone knew that he was most certainly dead.
The Order theorized that he had been murdered by Voldemort after refusing to do his bidding. They counted his death as a victory for the good of the wizarding world. This was a theory that Sirius whole heartedly believed. He enjoyed rubbing the pain in his mother's face.
"Precious Regulus, a Death Eater, and a poor one at that."
The funeral had been quick, his casket lay empty. The room was suspended in eerie silence.
It broke Walburga, it killed Orion, and it drove Kreacher mad.
It was the beginning of many funerals that Silvia would pay visit to.
A week after the wedding, Dumbledore had summoned the Order of the Phoenix. The Daily Prophet was aiming to write a story on the defenders of good, and they needed a group picture to take it one step further.
Silvia stood in the back, with Sienna and a few other former classmates at her side. The picture was taken hastily. A few people were offered copies. Remus took one to share with his sister.
"I look like an Amazon," she told him as she scrutinized the photo over dinner.
"No, I look like an Amazon. You, on the other hand, you're more like a Nile or a Mississippi."
"Thank you, Remus."
"I'm proud of both of you," Lyall said, setting a bowl of steamed carrots on the table. "Did you see, the Prophet called you 'Defenders of the Good.'"
"Who even was that woman who interviewed us?" Silvia asked, scooping some carrots onto her plate.
Lyall studied the article. "Rita Skeeter. Ever heard of her?"
She shook her head.
"Seemed young," Remus said. "Very enthusiastic. I bet she'll give aunt Lita a run for her money."
"Mhm," Lyall added. "She sure will."
The will had been short.
The Potters were proud of their son. James would inherit his father's invisibility cloak ant the family fortune. They requested a small funeral and to be buried in Godric's Hollow.
James invited his friends, as well as a few immediate family members, to the viewing. Lyall spent a decent amount of time next to Fleamont and Euphemia's open caskets, as if talking to old friends.
"Watch over my wife," he whispered to them. "Make sure that all is well."
Silvia and Remus stood awkwardly by James, just as James had years before.
"Dragon Pox," James explained. "She was first, just two days before him. He told me that he was happy, and they had accepted death knowing that I was fulfilling their dream by marrying Lily."
"I'm so sorry, Prongs," Remus said, breaking through the heavy silence.
"Don't be," James said peacefully. "They lived long, wonderful lives. I only hope I can live like they had."
"You and Lily will be happy for a long time. I'm sure of it," Remus told his friend comfortingly.
James smiled. "Thanks, Moony."
"Blaire's here," Silvia told them. "She's huge,"
"Merlin's beard," James said. "I'm starting to have regrets, looking at how big she is."
"Regrets? About what?"
Blaire approached. "I feel awful. James, I'm sorry about your parents."
"You've swallowed the moon, I see," James immediately pointed out.
"Thank God," said Remus.
"Oh yes," Blaire said, running a hand over her belly.
Lily appeared behind James. "I think everyone is here. Are you ready to start the eulogy?"
James cleared his throat. "Yes, of course." He began to approach the altar as Lily motioned for everyone to sit. He took a deep breath with his wife by his side as he began to speak.
"Thank you all for coming today. What a pleasure it is to see you all on such a dark day. It's extremely difficult to lose a parent. I see the toll it's taken on my friends." He motioned to Remus and Sirius, who each nodded appreciatively. "Just imagine what it feels like to lose both." Lily patted him on the back. "My parents were each incredible in their own special ways. Many of you have known them personally. When my friend, Sirius, was in a time of need, my parents reached out to him and let him into their lives, into their homes. My parents once told me that they considered Sirius as a second son that they never had."
James sighed and wiped his eye. "My deepest regret was being unable to provide them with a grandchild before their sudden passing. However," he looked to Lily quickly before continuing, "our child will grow knowing the successes of Fleamont and Euphemia. Our child will know them the way we did. This child will never spend a moment without us or the memory of their grandparents. It will live in a world of constant love for us and for the life of its grandparents.
"Even without a person being in your life, you can still learn to love the mere thought of them. That is what we hope for our child. This child will never be alone, even when we are gone.
"Once again, I'd like to thank you all for coming today. Please, enjoy your lives. Enjoy the simple things."
