"James, there's something I need you to do." Remus was nervous. The two sat alone in the Gryffindor common room.
"What can I do for you, man?" asked James as he pretended to study.
"Lily isn't here, you don't have to pretend you're reading that book."
"Thank Merlin," James declared as he slammed it shut.
"Yeah, you were reading it upside down anyway," Remus pointed out.
James dropped the book on the couch, annoyed. "Oh, look at me, I'm Remus, I'm so smart, I hold my books properly. Give it a break, dude." He laughed. "So, what is it that you need help with?"
"Well, my mum's sick again," Remus lied
"Dude, seriously? She's sick every other month. What's up with her?"
Remus shrugged. "Dunno, I'm just worried."
"Is Silvia leaving too?"
"Not this time," Remus explained. "She has an exam tomorrow and can't make it."
"Poor Hope. She's a wonderful woman."
Remus sighed. "She's a great mom." He turned to look James in the eye. "I need you to do me a favor."
"Anything for you," James said. "Especially in your time of need. My parents are always sick. They're so damn old."
"Well," Remus began. "You see, Sirius is a bit suspicious of my whereabouts. I overheard him talking to Snivellus at the Three Broomsticks the other day."
James cringed. "Snivellus? Why would Sirius be talking to him. Shouldn't he be snogging your sister or something?"
"Please, don't talk about snogging my sister."
"Okay, so what do you want me to do?" James asked. "About the talking to Snivellus part. I can't make Sirius stop snogging Silvia."
"Snivellus is going to be waiting for me outside of the common room before I leave. I keep my emergency luggage under the whomping willow. I can't let him follow me under, it's too dangerous. I need you to keep him out."
James nodded, making it obvious that he had just spaced out. "Away from the whomping willow. Got it."10:23 PM
"Snavely, we need you to just wait behind this statue for like an hour. He should be gone by then, if he leaves. I stole James's invisibility cloak. He's going to kill me when he finds out, but please, you have to tell me what's wrong with Remus." Sirius and Peter were waiting outside of the common room. They passed the cloak onto Severus, who draped it around his shoulders.
"I'll make sure he kills you later," Severus promised.
"We're going in. Good luck, Severus."
"Godspeed," Peter squeaked.
The two sauntered into the common room. "Why hello, James, Remus," Sirius said.
James furrowed his eyebrows. "Sirius, Peter?"
"Going somewhere tonight, Remus?" asked Peter.
"Actually, yeah," Remus said. Sirius and Peter shared a glance.
"Where too?" Sirius asked.
"Hey, leave him alone," James said. "His mum's sick again."
"Oh is she?" Peter asked sarcastically.
"Yes, actually," James snapped. "He was just leaving. I was going to walk him to the gates." He stood up. "Let's go now, Remus. Your luggage is waiting for you."
"Um, yes." Remus stood up awkwardly. "I guess we're leaving now. Good night, guys, I'll see you soon."
"Mhm," Sirius said, crossing his arms.
"G'night, Remus! Tell your mum I said hi!" Peter called as they left. Sirius elbowed him in the ribs. "Ow! What was that for?"
Sirius watched as they closed the door. "Remus isn't seeing his mum, remember? He's on drugs!"
"His mum's sick and he's doing drugs? What a rough life."
Sirius hit Peter on the back of the head. "You ditz! We just have to wait for whatever Snavely sees Remus do. Maybe drugs, maybe something worse, much worse."10:28 PM
Severus heard a sudden noise as the Gryffindor common room door flew open to reveal James and Remus. He smirked as he soundlessly followed them down the dark hall.
"Why do you leave your things under the whomping willow? Isn't that dangerous," he heard James ask as they hurried down a flight of stairs
"No one can steal it there," Remus lied. "They don't realize that you can just immobilize it and go inside. Most people are to afraid to even approach the tree."
Severus took a mental note in his head.
As the two approached the doors, Severus heard James say goodbye as Remus slipped out the door. James then slammed the door. "Not so fast, Snivellus."
Severus pulled the invisibility cloak off.
"You better go back, Severus," James said.
Severus was suddenly caught off guard by James's use of his actual name. He held his wand between James's eyes. "Sirius told me about the secret passageway under the whomping willow. I'm going to discover what Remus has been doing, and when I do, I'll make sure that you're all expelled. Thanks for the invisibility cloak by the way. As a 'you're welcome', I'd appreciate if you would kill Black as soon as possible. Immobulus."10:59 PM
"James, what are you doing here?" Sirius asked as he and Peter hurried down the stairs. "Where's Remus?"
Peter quickly used a counter curse.
James gasped for breath. "How did you know about the passage way?"
"Found it," Sirius explained.
"Well, now you've done it!" James cried, pushing the front doors open. The two followed him through the courtyard.
"What exactly?" Sirius asked in utter confusion.
"You let Snivellus go under the whomping willow with Remus!"
"So that's where Remus goes." Sirius gasped.
"Of course that's where Remus goes!" James cried as they ran toward the whomping willow.
"Even I knew this," Peter added.
"What the bloody hell are you two on about?" Sirius screamed. "So what if they're both under the whomping willow? It's not like Remus is going to kill him!"
"That's exactly what's going to happen, Sirius, you daft idiot!" James yelled. Peter was hyperventilating.
"What am I missing here?" Sirius demanded.
"Oh, goddammit, Sirius! Remus is a bloody werewolf!"
"He's what!?"
Peter sighed. "James and I figured it out during second year. He made us promise not to tell you. He thought it would ruin his friendship with you. If your parents found out you'd never be able to talk to him again. He'd probably get expelled."
Sirius's jaw dropped. "You're telling me that my best friend is a werewolf and I just let Severus Snape walk into a death trap protected by a werewolf?"
"That's exactly what we're saying!"
"So, he's not on drugs?"
"No, he's just a bloody werewolf!" James cried. "Immobulus!" He hurried into the entrance. "Severus! Severus! Get out now!" He hurried down the long hallway and into the shrieking shack to find Severus standing over Remus, who crouched in the corner shaking.
"I think he's having a seizure," Severus said, turning to James in confusion.
"He's turning," James corrected him. "Get out now before we both gets hurt."
Severus smiled. "Lupin's a werewolf, eh?"
"This isn't a joke, Snavely!" James was flustered. "If you don't get out of here now, he's going to kill you.
A river of foam ran from Remus's mouth.
Severus began to walk back into the hallway. "I will tell Headmaster Dumbledore. You will all be expelled."
They ran as they heard a high pitched howling. Sirius and Peter helped pull them out of the base of the tree.
"I'm going into shock," Severus said suddenly.
"You and me both man," Sirius added. "Let's get back to the castle before he finds us."
"By the way, Snavely," James said as they ran. "Dumbledore already knows about Remus. He's the one who planted the tree for him and made the passageway.
"Yeah," added Peter. "If you want to get us expelled, you're going to have to try much harder than that."
Severus sighed. They pulled the doors open to find Professor McGonagall standing with her arms crossed. "You saved my life," he told James. "But, I think you killed all of our Hogwarts careers."
"That is correct, Mr. Snape," McGonagall explained. "All of you, report to my office at once. We will sort out your punishments."
"Well, we're ending our fifth year with a bang, I suppose," Sirius said, grinning devilishly as the boys followed McGonagall.
