Silvia lied in bed, surrounded in blankets, unable to sleep on that life-changing night in early December. Rain pounded her bedroom window, and a fire crackled in her fireplace nearby.
Blaire had recently given 12 Grimmauld Place to Sirius, believing that he was the rightful inheritor. Sirius extended the invitation to Silvia and Remus, who gladly agreed to live in the house. Neither of them could longer stand living in the home where their mother once lived and where their mother died. For that reason, Lyall refused to leave. He stayed loyal to the memory of his late wife and allowed his children to leave, understanding completely that they were haunted by the past.
Blaire quickly decided that Einrich Estate was the better place for her child to live and grow. Aunt Lita was ecstatic. The idea of raising a baby again thrilled her.
Silvia continued to shuffle under the blankets, listening as the grandfather clock downstairs struck one in the morning. She sighed and flipped over anxiously. The sound of Remus's bed creaking from the next door room told her that he possibly was suffering the same sleepless night as she.
The clock ticked. Rain pounded like bullets onto the roof above her. Thunder clapped. Then, there came a knocking on the door.
Silvia stood up quickly, heart pounding. She peered out the window carefully to see a cloaked figure crouching over on the front porch. Silvia slid on a robe and slippers and grabbed her wand before flitting out of the bedroom.
The knocking came again, this time more abruptly, as Silvia descended the stairs.
"Oh, for heaven's sake," she heard a voice groan on the other side. "Alohomora!"
The door flung open. Silvia raised her wand quickly and pointed it to the figure. Slowly, she lowered it and paced her breathing.
"Sirius? What the bloody hell do you think you're doing scaring me like that.
He lowered the hood of his cloak and and stepped inside. "I have to tell you something."
A soft moaning sound came from inside the cloak.
"Merlin's beard, Sirius. There's something in your cloak, isn't there?"
The moaning grew into a cry. Sirius began to rock back and forth and shush the crying.
"You're got a baby in your cloak?"
Sirius shut the door quickly before opening his cloak to reveal a baby swaddled in a Malfoy coat of arms embroidered place mat.
Silvia gasped. "You kidnapped a Malfoy baby?"
He cleared his throat. "Well, no. Not exactly kidnapped–"
"But this is a baby that isn't yours, mine, or Remus's and it's wrapped in a bloody place mat from Malfoy manor."
The baby began to cry again. Sirius sighed. "This isn't Narcissa's baby, Silvia. It's Bellatrix's."
She took a step back. "You've brought this cursed baby into our home? Don't you remember what Bellatrix Lestrange has done to us?"
"Please," Sirius said. "They were neglecting her. Narcissa helped me smuggle her out. If it wasn't for her, this baby would become to poster child for Death Eaters worldwide. If I take her back now, imagine her fate, Silvia."
Silvia looked to the baby with disgust.
"I know she's from a bad family, but she's my family. If I had the chance to save just one person from the Dark..."
"Fine," Silvia sighed. "I suppose she is beautiful," she said, looking into the baby's dark blue eyes. "How old is she?"
"About a month," Sirius explained. "Narcissa and I named her a couple weeks ago. Bellatrix never even named her. Could you image?"
"That's awful," she said, crossing her arms thoughtfully. "A baby without a name."
"We called her Callisto Walburga Lestrange. I decided on Callisto. Narcissa decided on Walburga because she pities my insane mother."
"It's a beautiful name."
"What? Walburga?"
"Callisto."
Sirius nodded pensively. "Remus told me it was one of his favorite names."
"May I?" Silvia asked, reaching out for the baby. Sirius nodded and handed it to her. "Hello there, little one," she said awkwardly. "Hello, Callisto. My name is Silvia. I suppose I'm you're mother now."
The baby began to wail. Sirius took her back into his arms.
"We can try that again later," he said as he rocked her.
"What's going on down there?" Remus asked from the top of the stairs.
Silvia peeked up from the bottom to see him. "Sirius kidnapped a baby. Come see."
"Bloody hell, Padfoot," he said as he hurried down. "You can't just take babies when you want you."
"Bugger off, Moony. I was given permission to smuggle this baby out of Malfoy Estate."
"You stole a Malfoy baby?"
Sirius waved his free arm around, annoyed. "Do I have to explain this again? Bellatrix. Baby. Evil. Neglect. Narcissa. Smuggle."
"I get the jist," Remus said. "What's her name?"
"Callisto Walburga Lestrange," Sirius explained again.
"Callisto," Remus said softly. The baby suddenly looked at him. He held his arms out. "Please..."
"Of course," said Sirius as he placed the baby in Remus's arms. It instantly smiled and curled up against his chest.
Silvia watched the exchange and almost envied the reaction Remus had on the baby. She sighed angrily. "Fine then. You two can be her parents."
Sirius and Remus grinned at each other awkwardly as the baby slept.
Blythe Lolita Black was born in March of 1980, when Callisto was just four months old.
Sirius looked down at his new niece, knowing that he had no influence over the future of what she would become. Anti muggle born sentiment ran in her blood. Sadly, he knew he couldn't kidnap this baby. He couldn't make Silvia and Remus raise this one to make it reflect their positive attitudes, the attitudes that he had admired since his youth. Sirius watched in bitter hatred as his mother held Blythe and cooed her, watching her in this one moment with more love for her than she had ever in a lifetime of glances at him.
Remus arrived later on with Callisto strapped to his chest, her head tilted to one side as she slept. Blaire was one of the few who understood their bizarre situation. She looked to the three of them with endless support and sympathy.
"I want them to be best friends," she whispered as she rocked Blythe. "I hope you or Silvia can have some babies of your own too, so Blythe can have real cousins."
"Of course," Remus said, despite being unable to grasp the concept she had placed before him. "Callisto is Regulus's cousin's daughter. They're still related."
"I don't quite feel connected to the Blacks," she admitted. "They intimidate me."
"You and me both."
Mulbee appeared before them. "Mistress Blaire, you have another visitor."
"Ah." Blaire nodded. "I wasn't expecting anyone else. Let them in."
A young woman with puffy cheeks stepped into the parlor, followed by a little girl with purple hair.
"Hello, Blaire, is it?" the woman asked. Blaire nodded. "My name is Andromeda Tonks. I knew you when you were very young."
Blaire nodded. "I remember you. Frankly, you were my favorite of you and your sisters."
"I'm flattered," Andromeda said uncomfortably.
"You married a muggle born."
"Um, yes." Andromeda quickly changed the subject. "This is my daughter, Nymphadora."
"Dora, please." The little girl's hair suddenly turned red.
Remus didn't pay the little girl any attention. "I suppose you're here to see Regulus's daughter."
Andromeda nodded. "She's my kin. I was hoping I could have at least one Black to know me as a genuine person, not a blood traitor."
"You are though."
"Blaire."
"Fine, Remus. If you want her to connect to your kin, tell her who's baby is strapped to your chest."
He turned to Andromeda. "Bellatrix had a baby in secret, who she had neglected until Sirius took her to Grimmauld Place where he, my sister, and I are raising her.
Andromeda's eyes lit up. "Nymphadora has a cousin?"
"Yes." Remus motioned to the sleeping baby. "Callisto Lestrange."
"Hey you," Nymphadora said. Remus looked down to see that she had shifted her face to look like his own.
Unsettled, he took a step back. She cackled at his reaction. Callisto woke up and began to wail.
"I suppose I'm going to leave now. It was nice seeing you again, Andromeda and," he looked down at Nymphadora, "whatever your name was."
Quickly, he left through the floo to find Silvia lying on the parlor floor, asleep. Remus smiled. "Oh, Sil," he whispered, unstrapping the baby carrier. He set Callisto in her high chair before lifting Silvia off the floor and carefully setting her on the couch. Then, he sat down in a dining chair right next to Callisto and sighed.
"You've got a lot of interesting characters to meet, honey," he said, smiling at her.
