I opened my eyes, forcing myself out of the nightmare. Catching my breath was difficult. An elephant sat in my chest, forcing any air in my lungs out. My head ached, the stabbing pain in my temple reminding me just how real everything was. I couldn't see much with the poor lighting, but I could feel someone laying on my chest. It was Bucky. He wasn't the reason I couldn't breath, but I don't think he was helping my situation.
I gently took his arm out from around my waist, pressing little kisses to his head as I slowly and carefully moved out from underneath him. I sat up on the edge of the bed, brushing all of the hair that had fallen out of my ponytail out of my face.
Only then did I realize my skin was covered in a cold sweat. I hunched over on the edge of the bed and ran my hands over my face, squeezing my eyes shut as tight as possible. I expected the dreams now. After having them last night too, I came to the conclusion that getting the nightmares to go away would be a long process, just like in the beginning. Luckily, I was able to get out before I could get too far in.
Pushing the blankets back, I left the bed with my phone in hand and went to the kitchen. There were bags with a few things in them like water and snacks. I bypassed all of it and went to the back door. i found myself at the shore of Lake Superior calling someone I hadn't spoken to in forever.
"Hello?"
"It's me, Sadie." I smiled softly at the sound of her voice. I moved down towards the dock, holding the phone to my ear.
"Widia! Oh my gosh! It's so good to hear from you. I miss you so much. We've been worried sick about you here. Are you okay? How is everything?"
"I don't want to talk about me, Sadie. How's the baby?"
"He's growing so fast, Widia. I wish you were here."
I could hear the happiness in her voice as she spoke. I sat down on the edge of the dock, criss crossing my legs.
"Me too." I just barely smiled. "You didn't ask about the time like you usually do."
"It's midnight here. I'm guessing you haven't even tried to get some sleep yet if it's that time where you are."
"No.... no, I have."
"Really? Are you guys in a safe place?"
"Yeah. For now we are. I just couldn't stay asleep, Sadie. I don't think I've ever wanted my meds more than I do now." I brushed pieces of hair back.
"Do you need anything? I can meet you half way again."
"I'll be okay. I'm just complaining." I shook my head and looked out over the lake. "I missed this."
"What?"
"The lake. Talking to you."
"Maybe you guys would be safer if you were here, Widia. Jeremiah just got the basement completely finished and there's two rooms down there with his man-cave. There's three rooms upstairs–not counting the nursery and our room—,"
"Sadie, I can't do that to you. I won't do that to you." I cut her off. "We're okay where we are."
"I just want you safe, Widia."
"I want you safe too, Sadie. And this is how I'm doing that."
Silence fell between us.
"Tell me about what's happened." I spoke softly.
"Well, baby Zac just started to kick last week. I'm nearing the fourth month. Five more to go."
"I bet Jeremiah's worrying himself to pieces."
